I didn’t have to ask what he was referring to. Still, I couldn’t keep the bite out of my words as I said, “I wasn’t planning on it.”
“Good,” he said. “I’ll call you when we’re out.”
The call ended.
I slipped the phone back into my pocket and returned to my car.
Time slipped away on the drive to my place. My thoughts were consumed with replaying the fight over and over again, trying to figure out if there was a way I could have stopped things from heading in the unfortunate direction they had taken. I couldn’t come up with a way, much good it did for after the fact.
Once I pulled into my driveway, I brought Savannah into my room and laid her on my bed. I stood in the doorway and watched her sleep for the longest time.
I never thought she would ever be in my bed, much less under the circumstances.
No. That wasn’t right. I had to take that back. I had thought about it. A lot. But the thought and desires actually becoming reality? Never in a hundred years.
The important thing was that she was resting. I figured it would be a couple of hours before she woke up at the very minimum. And when she did, she was going to need food to recover.
I left the room and headed into the kitchen to start preparing a feast of high protein and sugary foods to help her regain her strength. She was going to need to recoup as much of the energy she had lost as possible. Especially since it was made blatantly clear that she was on the group’s list of targets.
And I would be damned if I allowed this to happen to her again.

SAVANNAH
The aroma of bacon flowed into my nose, pulling me from my deep sleep. I stretched my arms over my head as my lips pulled into a wide smile. The bacon made me hungry. I peeled my eyes open and focused on my unfamiliar surroundings. My heart palpitated as I didn’t recognize anything. I instantly pulled myself up into a sitting position and stared at everything that filled the room, which wasn’t much at all. Only the bare necessities. The most unusual thing that stuck out to me was the lack of a comforter.
There was nothing that indicated where I was. That was until a familiar whistle floated through the air from somewhere outside of the room. I relaxed, realizing it was Jacob. The tune was one he would often whistle when he was busy with something. I must have been brought to his place. Why? I wasn’t sure. There had to have been a good reason though.
I gently and quietly slipped off his bed and tip-toed out of the room, instantly stepping into his living room. The bedroom was done up in dark neutral shades. The living room was no different, including the leather sofa and recliner that sat facing a wall of bookshelves with a TV built into the center of them.
I nodded to myself, impressed with the stylistic choices. The setup suited Jacob.
It wasn’t hard to figure out where the kitchen was. Smiling to myself I continued to step lightly toward the room, stopping inside the opening. Jacob was in front of the stove, shirtless, working hard at cooking bacon. His long, black hair spilled along his back like ribbons of silk. I bit my lip to keep myself from walking over and running my fingers through it just to see if it was as soft and smooth as it looked.
Soft instrumental music whispers through the air from speakers strategically set throughout the home. The tones were inviting, peaceful, and soothing.
He didn’t know that I was standing behind him, staring at the way his muscles moved with everything he did. He also didn’t smell my arousal…
Yet.
Several seconds ticked by when he took in a deep breath and stiffened. He slowly turned to face me. I smiled at him, meeting his darkened gaze which made me wet between the thighs.
“You didn’t have to go through the trouble,” I said, gesturing to the food.
“Oh, this is for me,” he said and chuckled. “Go get your own.”
I joined in on the laugh. “I’ll get right on that.”
“I’ve been waiting a long time to cook for you,” he said. “To be perfectly honest.”
“Really?” I asked, still smiling.
He chuckled. “Nah. I just wanted to see what your reaction would be when I told you that.”
I shook my head. “I didn’t know about that.”
“I know you didn’t. It was a secret.” He smiled again.
