“The only choice we had was to fight the best we could. Then she somehow was able to use her magic, and that seemed to turn the tide for us,” I said and then paused one last time.

Squeezing my eyes closed, I replayed everything that had just happened and blamed myself even more.

“Then what happened?” Liam asked.

I shrugged. “She and I managed to take out two of them. The last four, she blasted with magic. So much magic. She ended up blowing them into the wall. I have no idea where they took off to, but the spell was too much for her. She collapsed onto the ground just before you two came running up.”

Liam pinched his nose and clenched his jaws.

There were very few times where I had observed my boss doing such a thing, and even fewer times that I wanted to stick around and watch the rage explode.

Noah looked up at the building. “I don’t see a fire.”

A pinch entered the center of my forehead as I wondered what the idiot was going on about. Of course, there was a fire. I wasn’t making it up.

Then I looked up and there was nothing. I gaped at the scene. “The hell?”

“They can use magic,” Liam said. “That’s how they were able to block Savannah’s powers and make you believe they set a fire trap for you.”

I nodded. “One of them could use magic for sure. During the fight, he tried to lasso the two of us with a strange, electrical, rope.”

“Right,” Liam said and raked his gaze over our surroundings. He appeared to be mulling something over until he added, “I’ll take Noah with me up to the apartment. We’ll check things out and see if we can figure out what happened. Maybe they got careless and cocky and left more clues behind this time.”

“You really think they made a mistake?” I asked unable to believe that. “After everything we have been through so far?”

Liam shrugged. “Won’t know until we get up there. Get Savannah home. She needs rest.”

I nodded.

“Let’s go, Tempest,” Liam commanded.

Noah hesitated. He continued to stare at Savannah, sleeping in my arms. He kept clenching his hands into fists and relaxing them. Almost as though he hated the very thought that she was in my arms. Maybe he was thinking about hitting me. Then again, I sort of hated myself for allowing this to happen in the first place.

I wanted to goad him on, but my heart wasn’t in it. Never mind the small bubble of excitement that gave me some satisfaction. It wasn’t enough to ease the guilt inside me.

“Noah, now,” Liam barked.

Noah nodded and moved forward. The tortured expression on his face didn’t escape my notice. But I wasn’t going to worry about him. Savannah needed rest.

I carefully picked her up from the ground and carried her back to my car, gently sitting her in the front seat. Once I was situated behind the wheel, I pulled away from the curb and headed back to her place.

I knew the route like the back of my hand and mindlessly drove through the streets of Denver until I had pulled up in front of her house. The whole trip was done in a matter of minutes. And once I had placed the car into park, I stared at the house for several moments.

Knowing I had to get her inside, I left her in the car long enough to make sure things were as they should be and open the doors necessary to get her to her room with as little trouble as possible.

But the moment I stepped through her front door I took in total disarray. Her house was destroyed and ransacked. I sniffed the air, unable to pick up any scents that didn’t belong. But from what I already learned of the group, that wasn’t to suggest no body had been here. Clearly someone had, and they left the place tore up as a warning.

I sighed and pulled out my phone, dialing Liam.

“O’Connor,” he said.

“It’s me,” I replied. “Savannah’s place has been compromised. I’ll be taking her to mine.”

Liam sighed heavily over the line. “This doesn’t bode well for us.”

“I know,” I said. “Come to my place when you’re done there.”

“Don’t do anything unless you have absolutely no other options,” he warned. “Let us know when she is awake.”
