He turned around and settled his attention on my body, almost completely naked and exposed to the air. I winced with each movement, ignoring the darkened shade of green his eyes had taken.
It didn’t matter. So long as the witch hazel did its job, nothing would come of this but an awkward moment shared between co-workers. Never mind I was his subordinate.
I lay back down on the bed and nodded to the solution and rag. “Soak the rag in the liquid and start wiping me down.
“The stuff smells awful,” he said, opening the bottle with a frown.
“It works wonders though,” I said and waited for him to start applying the solution to my skin.
“Will it hurt?” he asked.
I shrugged and bit against the pain the motion caused. “No more than I already am.”
“We should have taken you to your coven,” he said.
“They have enough to deal with for right now,” I said. “I can handle this.”
He was incredibly gentle as he applied the witch hazel to my skin. I admired that about him, but I wasn’t nearly as fragile as he was making me out to be.
“You don’t have to be so gentle,” I said. “Rub it in. The more vigorous, the better.”
“How long will it take to work?” he asked.
I sighed. “I don’t know. This is one of the last options I have.”
“And if this doesn’t work?” he asked.
“We’ll cross that bridge if and when we get there,” I said.
“All right, but when I’m done, I need to inform Jacob. He’s been blowing up my phone since I’ve found you,” he said.
I nodded. It didn’t hurt nearly as much as it had moments ago.
Minutes later, he finished bathing me in the witch hazel and tossed the rag into my laundry hamper in the corner of the room.
“I need to get fresh air,” he said almost gagging.
I chuckled. “Big bad wolf can’t stand the smell of witch hazel?”
“Watch it, woman. You may be injured, but you are still under my care,” he said with a slight smirk.
I smiled. “You got it, Boss.”
“You sure you’re going to be okay?” he asked.
“You better go and let Jacob know what happened, else he may raze the city trying to find out for himself.”
He nodded with a frown and left the room while I laid as still as possible, willing the solution to work faster. The idea of my magic being blocked bothered me. I wanted to test out my powers, but I knew doing so would make my injuries worse.
What I really needed was rest, but with the clock ticking, I couldn’t afford the time to rest. The witch hazel had done wonders, but I wasn’t fully healed yet. There was only one other thing that would do the trick, and I didn’t have any options for that outside of Liam.
He appeared in my doorway. “What is it?”
“This healing is going much slower than I anticipated,” I said.
“What else can I do?” he asked.
“What I really need is a few days to rest, but I can’t afford to lose the time. Not with Avery counting on me to find her. I would never forgive myself if something were to happen to her.”
