What I couldn’t put my finger on, was why these things were present in a place that belonged to a dragon.
That, too, wasn’t normal.
I stepped into the heart of his living room and closed my eyes. I reached out my magic to test for any energies that didn’t belong, but also came up as empty as before.
Nothing was making sense. And the more I searched, the more I was faced with nothing. No clues. No evidence. Absolutely nothing. I was left disappointed and confused.
Everything was clean there. Nothing stood out to me. But I couldn’t quite shake the feeling that something wasn’t right. My intuition was flaring. I caught the sensation of being watched settling on my shoulders. Though I couldn’t physically see anyone else around, I felt them.
And my nerves were set on fire.

I never wanted to leave a place so bad in my entire life. I was uncomfortable, irritable, and all around frustrated. The sensation had increased tenfold when I received a message from Liam telling me he let Savannah go off on her own to Noah’s apartment.
I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do more… Hit Liam in his smug, stupid mouth for letting Savannah go alone or sink my panther’s claws into Noah’s scaley hide because he wouldn’t stop with his pestering.
If Noah didn’t cease with insisting we chit-chat like teenage girls, it just may be him that wins. And I would love nothing more. Dragons were a bunch of pretentious assholes. But apparently, my boss wanted to one-up Noah by insisting on letting a witch walk into a trap on her own. Especially when it came to the simple fact that we suspected the anonymous group known for taking witches was responsible for kidnapping a dragon shifter.
“Are you fucking kidding me?” I shouted at my phone when Liam’s words flash across the screen of my phone.
“What is it?” Noah asked, sitting up from the mattress. His voice was hitched slightly higher than normal. “What’s going on?”
I glared at him. His round green eyes stared back at me wide with worry. I smirked to myself. Not only did I not feel inclined to let him in on a conversation that was absolutely none of his business, but I wasn’t about to disclose any information to him. Particularly when it involved Savannah.
I noticed how he looked at her. I also had caught onto what his end game was with this whole missing sister thing. It wasn’t just a coincidence that he showed back up in her life. He was using his sister’s kidnapping to his advantage. And that didn’t sit well with me.
Besides, the less I had to say to him, the better. Talking to him, reacting to him, anything that remotely could be seen as a response only worked to encourage the dumbass.
I huffed and furiously typed a message back, letting our boss know just how ridiculous letting her go somewhere alone was, especially Noah’s place. I didn’t care who he was or that he was my boss. He should have done better. And with evidence pointing at Noah being a target as well, the fact she had gone alone was pure stupidity.
I just couldn’t get over how idiotic and brainless the notion was. If I could, I would have run to her aid.
“Relax,” he typed back. “If she doesn’t check in within an hour, we’ll know something is up.”
I tossed my phone to the table and growled. Wherever Liam’s head was, it clearly wasn’t in the right place. The thought of Savannah getting hurt was enough to drive me insane. I would go after her, but Noah needed babysitting.
As if his appearance in my life wasn’t already throwing a big enough wrench into the system, he was now preventing me from going to my partner’s aid. He and Liam both.
I swiped my phone from the table and typed, “I don’t like it.”
“Nor do I,” Liam replied. “Nothing about this case is adding up. Avery’s house had been cleaned of everything. Even energy.”
I stared at the phone, reading the message over and over again, trying to find a way to make sense of the news he had just shared with me.
“I would highly suggest you respectfully go after her and help out,” I typed.
“Negative,” he responded. “And don’t get any ideas either. Noah absolutely needs to have eyes on him.”
I snorted. “Afraid he’s going to disappear?”
Liam typed out, “No. He’s hiding something.”
“I was being sarcastic,” I typed while shaking my head. I added, “If she gets hurt, it’s only on you.”
I felt Noah’s eyes on me. I briefly glanced at him only to find out my suspicions were true. I growled out, “What are you staring at?”
