Jake frowns. He shifts his weight, and I’m suddenly very aware of his gun. “I don’t understand.”

“Blair and I are together now, Jake,” says Shane. “She stayed over at my apartment last night.”

Every muscle in my body tenses. I look at Jake, who looks at me like Shane has just told him I’m pregnant. Well, shit, I guess that could be true, too. Shane and I have had sex three times already, and there wasn’t a condom anywhere in sight. Shane better not tell him his plan to impregnate me, or Jake is definitely going to freak out.

“Is this true, Blair?” Jake asks. “You’re with Shane?”

“Um,” I say. “Yes?”

“I don’t fucking believe this,” says Jake.

“I’m in love with her, Jake,” says Shane.

My brother continues to stare at us in disbelief.

Shane clears his throat. “Actually, there’s something I want to talk to you about, Jake. I was hoping to get your blessing.”

“My blessing?”

“I was hoping to talk to you about this in private. But fuck it. I can’t wait. I want to ask Blair to marry me—” Shane glances at me, and my heart feels like it’s going to burst out of my chest, “—but I want to get your blessing first.”

Jake shakes his head. “Why should I approve of this madness?”

“Because I love her. And I’m going to cherish her and take care of her. And I’ll give her everything she wants in life. Jake, come on. You know me. I’ve always been true to my word.”

The shock is finally wearing off of my brother’s face. After a long moment of contemplation, he finally nods. “Okay. I believe you. This is insane, but I believe you.”

Shane nods, looking relieved. Then he turns to look at me with a giddy expression.

Oh my God. He’s getting down on one knee.

“Blair Meyers,” Shane says.

“Yes?” I squeak out.

“If I ask you to marry me right now, will you forgive me for not having an engagement ring to give you?”

I bite my lip.I nod.

“Okay. Then I have a very, very important question to ask you. Will you marry me?”

“Yes!” I say, leaping into his arms. I’m crying and laughing and am so freakin’ happy. I’m all his, and he’s all mine.

“Congrats, you two,” Jake says.

I stand up and give my brother a hug. Shane gives him a hug, too, the two of them clapping each other on the back.

“Tell me that I at least get to be the best man,” says Jake.

“Done,” says Shane.
