Alec metme early the next morning in the hallway outside my apartment. I left Violet fast asleep in my bed, my heart torn as I stood and gazed down at her angelic face. He shrugged. “Whatever,” he snipped and turned back to face his portal.

“Do you know where the compound is in Iowa?”

He rolled his eyes. “I wouldn’t be doing my job properly if I didn’t know where.”

We jumped into the portal and dropped into the middle of nowhere Iowa where the Ancient Order of Leviathans lived. Their tiny community was located just outside a small town, which afforded them the privacy they craved and lots of land to complete their training exercises without prying eyes. The remote location would also make it easier to exterminate them without attracting notice.

“All right, you know the plan?” I asked Alec.

“Ladies first.” He grinned and motioned me forward.

I rolled my eyes and stepped inside the walls of their gated community, followed by Alec. Once he stood beside me, I placed a hand on the ground and raised a mountain of stones and rocks, creating a dome over the community and closing us in so no one could escape.

Shrieks and screams rang out as soon as the sun was cut off and the whole place was enclosed in darkness.

“Your turn,” I said to Alec.

His hands ignited in flames as he purposefully strode forward, setting everything ablaze. The fire spread fast, catching on wood beams and cotton fabrics as if doused in gasoline. While he flung his path of destruction, I hurried through the compound to find the children.

Everyone ran and scrambled in frantic circles, trying to locate an exit. I felt each time they attempted to knock the walls down, but the rocks stacked back up on their own to rip away any shred of hope the humans may have had.

Ripping the children from their parents, I collected them all and surrounded them in a separate dome the fire could not touch to keep them safe. Then, Alec and I waited as the entire Ancient Order of Leviathans compound burned to the ground.

“You!” An older gentleman stomped toward us in the midst of chaos. “How could you turn on us after everything we’ve done for you?” He coughed and gasped, inhaling the thick plumes of smoke.

I stared him down with cold eyes. “After everything you’ve done for us? You mean trying to abduct one of our own for your gain?” I took a step toward him, but Alec held me back.

“The halfling? This is all because of the halfling?” he gasped and coughed, dropping to his knees. “She’s as good as dead.”

“What did you say?” I pushed past Alec and grabbed the man by the collar, hauling him up to eye level.
