I have a surprise for you.
I wentto the map app on my phone that showed my location. I took a screen shot and sent it to her. I was like a kid on Christmas morning, waiting for her to figure it out. I got up out of bed and slipped on my jeans. I was buttoning them up when she responded.
What’s that?
I rolled my eyes, not believing she didn’t get it.
That’sa map of my location.
She was killing me.I found a clean t-shirt out of my suitcase and put it on.
But it saysyou’re in Madison.
I pickedup my phone and dialed her number. This texting game was getting ridiculous. She answered before the phone even finished ringing once.
“What the fuck is going on, Cane?” she asked. She was annoyed with me, I could tell it by the tone of her voice.
“The picture I sent you showed you I’m in Madison, right?” I continued on, not letting her answer. “Well, baby, I’m here in Madison!” I grinned into the phone.
“Oh my God!” She screamed into the phone so loud I had to hold it away from my ear. “Where are you?”
I looked around the room to see if the name of the hotel was anywhere. I’d stayed in so many they all looked the same and I didn’t even notice anymore. “Some hotel. Do you want me to come there?”
“No!” She replied quickly. “I need to get out of here for a bit. Text me the address and I’ll be there within the hour.”
She hung on me before I could even say goodbye. I found the name of the hotel on a piece of stationary on the dresser and sent it to her. I turned on the TV, unable to wipe the stupid grin off of my face.
I looked at the clock by the bed. The next hour was going to be the longest ever. I hoped she hurried up. I couldn’t wait to wrap her in my arms.

LINDSEY
“Dad!” I threw my phone down on my bed and went to the hallway to find him. I needed a car so I could go to Cane. I needed to go get lost in him for a while and get away from all of this sickness and death.
I tried to wipe the smile off of my face so he didn’t ask what was up. I wasn’t ready to let them know Cane was in town. I didn’t know how long he was even here for. I still couldn’t believe he had surprised me like this. I never expected it or even entertained the thought. Just when I thought I had him figured out, he threw a curveball at me.
He was sitting at the kitchen table reading the paper and drinking some coffee. My older brother David was sitting next to him, his laptop open in front of him.
“I think you’re the last person in the world that reads the actual paper,” I muttered and rolled my eyes. “Where’s Mom?”
“She’s in bed. She’s not feeling so well today and didn’t even want to come out of bed.” He took a drink of his coffee and looked at me over his glasses. “And I like to read an actual paper.”
“I already harassed him about the paper. He has that nice iPad I bought him. I don’t know why he doesn’t read the paper on there,” my brother said dryly, not even bothering to look up at me from his laptop.
I laughed and kissed Dad’s cheek. While the circumstances for being home weren’t good, this was the best visit home I’d ever had. With Mom sick, all forgot about the issues of the past. I wouldn’t say they had gone away, but for now, we got along. No one harassed me about not going to school to be more than a rock and roll reporter or not marrying a doctor. Dad stayed off of David’s case for going to New York to practice instead of California where he wanted him to. For now, the peace was kept. I wasn’t sure if it would stay that way, but I was going to enjoy it for now.
I poured myself a cup of coffee, trying to act natural. If my brother got wind of Cane in town, I would never hear the end of it. He had been teasing me nonstop since getting into town about my rock god ‘boyfriend’. I was tired of hearing about it.
“Could I borrow the car today?” I asked casually after taking a drink of coffee.
“Sure,” Dad replied absent mindedly. I turned so they couldn’t see my big smile. My heart was beating so fast and my hands cold and clammy at the thought of seeing Cane later.
“Thanks,” I said. I emptied my cup and put in the dishwasher. I turned around to find my brother looking at me.
“Where you going, Linds?” He asked.
“Just running some errands,” I shrugged, wondering if anyone else heard the shrill in my voice.
