Epilogue

Three Weeks Later

Theweatherwasperfect.“I can’t believe that your mother owned an island,” I said, sipping my cocktail out of a coconut shell.

“I keep telling you she didn’t own it. She rented the place.”

“I’ve never heard of anyone renting an island, especially renting it forever.”

“Are you calling me a liar?” she asked playfully, running her fingers through my wind-tossed hair.

“I wouldn’t dream of such a thing. You’re a woman to be reckoned with, and I certainly don’t want to get on your bad side. What I mean to say is that it’s perfect here, and I can think of no other place I’d rather be.”

She smiled and sat down in the lounge chair beside me to soak up the sun. “I couldn’t agree more.”

After a few minutes of blissful silence, she asked, “so what do you want to do today in our island paradise?”

I hesitated, because I knew the idea would do nothing but upset her. But she asked, and I felt it was important. “We should really check the news to make sure no one is going to be looking for us.”

“But we paid for protection, and we were guaranteed that no one would ever find us here.”

I shook my head, reaching for her hand across the expanse between our two chairs. “Nothing is guaranteed, Ella. Not even that. We paid handsomely, yes, but someone else could come along and pay even more, and our protection could sell us out just like that. Angela’s family is rich. They could want to find her killers just as much as we want to get away. The only thing you can count on from now on is our love.”

She smiled as I kissed her hand. “Well, if that’s all I can count on, I can’t ask for anything more. If we ever have to abandon this place, there’s plenty of money left. Where else would you like to go?”

“I hadn’t really thought about it. I love being in a place where it’s so hot that you’re half naked every day, so I certainly wouldn’t want to go to a place where you have to cover up that glorious body of yours.”

“So, Alaska is out, then?”

I ignored her quip. “I’m sure there are other islands where the people would welcome us. But I don’t think we have to worry about that right now. Let’s just worry about getting the sand off.”

She got that little crinkle in her brow when she was confused. It was adorable. “Get the sand off what?”

“Everything. I’m about to pull you down on the sand right here beside my chair and fuck you until you scream my name at the top of your lungs. Prepare to have sand over every inch of your body.”

“Well, I’m just glad we are all alone here. I certainly wouldn’t want anyone to see that.”
