“Well-endowed with excellent stamina, please.”
I think my chin hits my desk. Who is this woman and what the fuck has she done with Jamie?
“Yes, ma’am. If you're sure?”
“I’m sure, Tim. It's time I started having some fun.”
As she walks back to her office, I catch my boss, Owen Matthews, watching her walk away from the doorway of his own office. I wonder how much he overheard.
“What’s up with Jamie?” He asks me when she closes the door to her office.
“She asked me to set her up on a date with one of my friends. It looks like she is ready to get back out there. She must be finally getting over Carl, the cheating asshole.” There is a flicker of something in his eyes, but he quickly covers it up and asks me about a spreadsheet for his presentation next week.
“Tim, please remind Jamie she needs to book accommodations for the both of us for this pitch; we will probably spend two nights there. Oh, sorry, I also forgot to ask her if she wants to drive or be driven, too.” I give him my assurance I will pass on his message and he returns to his office.
My thoughts quickly revisit my night with Lauren. I ensured she got home safely, even going in the taxi with her.
“Do you want to come in for coffee? That’s not a euphemism, by the way. Just coffee.” She looked rather flustered as she made the offer and I have to admit she also looked cute as hell.
“Okay, but only if I get a biscuit too.” She laughed at that, and it honestly felt surreal to be invited in for coffee by this alluring woman.
I had literally sat down when my phone started ringing. Jason. Oh, fuck off, Jason.
“Tim, I need you to come and get me now. That Eryn is a fucking looney tune. She threw me out of her apartment, and now I can’t find my wallet. Will you come and get me please, mate.” I groaned down the phone. “Oh, come on, Tim, don’t tell me you’re screwing the beached whale. You have no standards, mate.”
“Fuck off, Jason. You’re a grown man; find your own way home.” I turned off my phone; Jason’s comments irritated me. He didn’t give a shit about anything except himself. A second later, Lauren’s phone started to ring, too. Eryn was calling her and when she answered all I could hear was wailing.
Lauren spoke to her friend for a few minutes and then returned back to me. “It seems your friend puked up all over mine as they were… you know.”
We both looked at each other before we burst out laughing. “That’s Jason for you. He’s a complete mess; your friend has probably got off easy.”
She shook her head. “So, are you as bad as your friend?” I shook my head no, and I felt myself leaning towards her, wanting to kiss her plump, pink lips. “You don’t have to do this, Tim.”
When I heard that, I shifted closer to her and wrapped my arm around her shoulder. “Aww but, Lauren, I really, really want to kiss you so much.”
As our lips touched, she let out an involuntary gasp. I wanted more. So much more, but I also didn't want this to be a one-night thing.
“Can I get your number? So I can call you? Maybe we could go and get chips again some time."
My heart skipped a beat when she said yes.
So here I am, looking at her profile picture and considering what the hell I should text this beautiful woman.
“Tim! TIM! Why are you so distracted? Did Mr. Matthews leave any messages for me?” Jamie stands next to me with her hands on her hips. She looks so funny when she is mad, her cheeks are pink, her blue eyes are wide and her bobbed blond hair sways as she wobbles her head in outrage at me.
“Stop shouting, Jamie, or I’ll set you up with Jason.” She gasps in shock at me. She met Jason and has made her thoughts about him clear. He is a dirty dog and she doesn’t like him.
“You wouldn’t! Fine, I’ll sign up to the dating app that Billie sent me instead. There is more than one way to skin a cat.” She winks at me and, for a fleeting moment, my old pal Jamie is back, the one before her break-up. Cheeky, cheery and fun. I missed her. I hope by the time Christmas comes, she’ll have moved on and we can look forward to a better new year.
