“Don’t make a big deal out of this,” I said as I worked to remove it. I looked over at Ensley.
I didn’t want to freak her out, but I realized I also needed to normalize this around my family.
Evelyn looked away, a small blush gracing her cheeks. “Sorry. It’s just… you’ve always been so sensitive about it. I didn’t know how to react.”
Ensley moved off her mom’s lap and stood next to me. Her hands rested on my right thigh, and she looked on intently while I worked. “Does that hurt, Aunt Millia?”
I ruffled her hair and shook my head. “Not anymore, sweetheart.”
“Can I touch it?”
“Sure.”
I thought she meant the nub at the end of my thigh. I laughed when I realized she meant the prosthesis.
She grabbed it with her little hands, excitement entering her eyes. No doubt she would show off to Elliot later that she got to play with my leg.
I could laugh over the thought.
“Okay?” Evelyn asked, her eyes suspiciously shiny. So much for not making a big deal out of this.
I smiled and nodded. “Yeah. I’m okay.”
