“Come on, let’s go inside and see your sister. What is this she’s been telling me about you not visiting more often?”
I rolled my eyes at the statement. Evelyn and her big mouth.I was right.
We walked inside the house to pure chaos: at least five little ones running around, with the adults standing off on one side of the room, watching them with indulgent smiles on their face while conversing with each other.
I found my brother-in-law easily enough. He stuck out like a sore thumb, but I imagined Jace must have always stuck out his whole life, no matter where he went.
He was dressed in casual clothes today, in jeans, black sneakers and a gray shirt.
I hardly ever saw him in anything but a tailored suit, so this was kind of surprising. He threw his head back and laughed at something said in the group, and I couldn’t help but grin at the sight.
Jace had always been a little reserved, even with me, but he had been nothing but nice to me since day one, going so far as to open his house to me when I came to visit New York and my sister for the first time.
It was nice to see him so carefree.
Next to him was Jensen.
He stood out like a beacon on a foggy day. Though not as tall as Jace, there was an energy about him that always drew my eyes. I could have found him in any room with a blindfold on.
The effect he had on me was instantaneous.
Like Jace, he was dressed in casual wear today, in dark blue jeans, black boots, and tight-fitting black shirt that showcased every delectable muscle in his arms.
Fuck, he was hot.
I stumbled a bit, and Ethan shot me a frown. I pretended not to notice, my attention still on the man.
And that man was currently standing between Jace and a woman I didn’t know. Tall, curvy, and well endowed, she looked like the prettier, classierbrunette version of Kate Upton. I didn’t even think it was possible.
She laughed at something Jensen said, stars twinkling clearly in her eyes as she moved her hand to his forearm, resting it there for five seconds too long before using that same hand to flip her long hair flirtatiously over her shoulder.
I hated her on sight.
“You okay?” Ethan asked on my other side.
“What? Yeah, sure,” I answered casually. No, I wasn’t okay.
What was Jensen doing, talking to another woman?
I knew in the back of my mind that it was my insecurities talking, but did he have to stand so close to her when, just three days ago, he had kissed me like his life depended on it?
The woman moved closer to him, and I knew Jensen was trying to keep his distance but still be polite about it, and all I really wanted to do was scream at him, to tell him to screw politeness because I was seeing red.
“Come on, Emilia. I’m sure we can find Evelyn in the kitchen. She’s insisted on baking the cake for Ensley, so she’s probably there putting on the finishing touches,” Dad said, patting my arm with one hand.
Jensen, probably hearing my name, or hell, feeling my presence in this house, looked up and met my eyes.
He smiled.
I frowned and looked away from him, turning to my dad. “Yeah, let’s go.”
We turned our backs to Jensen and walked to the kitchen. I could hear footsteps behind us. Silently, I cursed the fact that neither my dad nor I were up to walking any faster, and Jensen would surely catch up to us.
“Emilia, wait up.”
Dad paused and turned at the sound of my name. I let out a sigh when I felt Ethan tense beside me.
I avoided looking at Jensen by looking down at the floor, yet my body was highly attuned to his. The simple sight of his shoes coming into view nearly had me coming undone.
