My legs bounce with nerves as we wait in Dr. Lovejoy’s office. I met her at Ronnies last appointment, grilling her with a million questions about getting pregnant. That visit was a lot more exciting. This one feels scary. What if something’s wrong?
Time has blurred together over the weeks since I first touched Ronnie. How long has it been? I didn’t want to get my hopes up that she could be pregnant already, but after watching her toss her cookies all over that pompous ass face, I was anxious for her to take a test. I also need to ensure she’s okay, so my heart rate can calm down.
“Well, hello again. I didn’t expect you two back so soon, but I guess you did say you had already started,” the doctor says lightly, walking into the room.
Ronnie nods and says something, but I remain stoic, brewing in my own fears. Explain, Doc put me out of my misery.
“You got sick at work?” Dr. Lovejoy asks for confirmation.
“Yes,” Ronnie says.
“And you stopped at the lab on your way in today?”
Ronnie nods.
Dr. Lovejoy reads over something on her computer screen and nods.
“Ok, I’m going to go get those results. Sit tight.”
“I don’t think you could be wound any tighter,” Ronnie says as the door closes behind the doctor. I stand and wipe my sweaty palms on my jeans. I take a deep breath and hold her face.
“I’m just worried. But everything will be fine, and she’ll come in here and tell you so. Don’t worry.” I say, more to calm myself than Ronnie. I place a chaste kiss on her forehead.
“What if she says more than that?”
I smile down at her, feeling lighter.
“You mean what if she tells us you’re pregnant? Well then, I’m going to brag about my amazing manhood, of course.”
That makes her laugh and stops her worrying her lip. We’re both anxious about the results, but it takes the Doc thirty minutes to come back. When she does, I’m pacing, and Ronnie has torn up a napkin in her lap.
“Ok, Are you ready for the results of the pregnancy test?”
“Yes,” we say in unison.
The doctor chuckles as she logs back into her computer. I pull Ronnie to my side and take a deep breath. Within seconds, we’ll hear if we’re parents. If not today, I know it’ll be soon, so I give my girl a reassuring squeeze.
“We got this no matter what,” I whisper.
She nods with an affectionate smile just as the doctor reads us our results. “The test results are positive. Congratulations, Mom and Dad.”
Tears spring to Ronnie’s eyes as her face lights up in gleeful surprise. I beam with pride as she jumps into my arms. We hold each other for so long the doctor has to clear her throat to get our attention.
“I’m very impressed with the quick results,” she says, and we all laugh.
“Told you,” I whisper to Ronnie.
“Moving forward, we’ll get you in for an ultrasound. Keep doing everything you’re doing and get lots of rest. I’ll see you both again soon.”
“Thank you, Dr. Lovejoy.”
When the door closes, I pick Ronnie up in my arms and growl like an animal. God, I’m so happy, I can’t find words, but luckily, she finds them for me.
“I love you.”
They’re so soft I barely hear her. When I pull back to look at her face, her eyes are wide and scared.
