“The Golden Gate?”
“It’s like nothing else in the world; unique,” I reply.
“And you like things that are unique?”
“Sometimes. Why do you like the fog so much?”
She smiles, and my heart aches at the quiet happiness I see there. “I don’t know,” she says softly. “It makes everything a little more magical, I guess.”
“Magical? Are you a Current girl then?”
“You mean am I magical?” she shakes her head. “No. And I don’t care much about magic as a rule.”
“What do you care about?” I ask, moving closer despite myself.
She turns to face me fully. “Freedom.”
“You picked the wrong place, if that’s what you want.”
“Did I? You have no idea...” she trails off, shaking her head. I can see her eyes getting distant, moving away from me.
Without thinking, I reach out and take her hand. “Then tell me.”
She blinks up at me, her hazel eyes darkening with something that looks a hell of a lot like passion to me. “I’m an omega. I don’t get to be free. But here... at least everything’s out on the table, right? There’s no hidden agenda for me to worry about.”
Guilt flashes through me, but before I can respond, I hear Henry slam the front door, calling my name.
Carissa pulls her hand away from mine. “I like your tattoos, by the way.”
With that, she turns and rushes back into her room, leaving me with my hand outstretched, wishing I could call her back.
Chapter Eight - Carissa
Ican still feel thewarmth from the alpha’s hand on mine as I get into bed to sleep. The suite has at least four bedrooms other than this one, but they’re all empty.
When we came upstairs, there was some sense of camaraderie between me and the other omegas; not quite trust, but the beginning of something. But all that cooled when Lily announced that the others would all be in a suite together, and I would be separate. Eye daggers were thrown, whispers began. I couldn’t even blame them; I was sure they thought I pulled strings to get myself special treatment. I didn’t even try to explain that it isn’t true. They wouldn’t have believed me anyway.
