A smirk slips across Caiden’s lips before quickly dropping as he nods. “We’ll be here. I’m sorry that I can’t tell you now, but I need to make sure that Kai isn’t alone with his dad again.”

“Fine. Go.”

Caiden squeezes my hand once more before darting back down the hallway, and I feel like my heart is in my stomach. He’s afraid of Kai being alone with his father? Why? What the fuck had happened? How bad could their relationship be that Caiden is afraid for them to be left alone?

Knowing that I won’t be able to focus on anything until I know Kai is okay, I decide a bath is in order. The chances of me being able to relax are slim to none, but I need to do something to fill my time.

After I fill the tub with way too many bath salts and bubbles, I climb inside. I find my mind wandering to those who run the minor courts—their aristocracy, I remind myself of the correct term. One thing became very obvious during this dinner—they do not care for me one bit—not even Iris and Veronica, who had at least attempted to get to know me. But I don’t know how much of that is because of who I am—what I am. As Grace had reminded me, if I hadn’t shown up in Sorlphi, it is the guys’ parents who would have been next in line to rule.

But it also has me thinking about the current system the minor courts have in place for their ruling class, the aristocracy. I think it might be time for Sorlphi to move to a democracy. Power can corrupt and having the same families in power generation after generation is asking for trouble.

I let my eyes fall shut as I consider this, the hot water lulling me and before I know it, I’m falling asleep.
