“I guess so…” I smiled tightly. “I get the feeling that he won’t take me having a love affair very lightly.” She chuckled now, wiping her tears away. “Both of our situations are super shitty. But it’s our father, it’s our family. We need to be brave and do our duty, okay?”

She blew her frustrations out in a whoosh of a sigh. “Yeah, okay.”

“If anything, we do it to save ourselves and the innocent people we put in danger, like Steven, and like Matt, okay?”

She nodded solemnly.

“So… tell me about Matt,” I said, grinning, and her face lit up.

Later that evening, I got a text from Huxley. He asked me if I could sneak out, that he’d pick me up outside the perimeter wall where I usually managed to get out. It was a blind spot in the security, a dark spot at the side of the house where the crewmen never strolled, and the cameras didn’t cover. Viola and I figured it out a few years ago, and it was how we could sneak off to a party every now and then.

I dressed in a pair of jeans and a sweater—we weren’t fucking in the car anymore, so I didn’t need the ease of access. Well, I hoped so at least. I wasn’t sure if he’d booked another hotel room tonight. Quickly throwing some makeup and deodorant in my handbag, I checked the corridor before sneaking down the stairs, bending over the rails to see if anyone was in the corridor below. Nope, all clear.

I could hear my father’s voice in his office, so I rushed past the door and into the formal lounge. There, I quickly moved to a window in the far corner of the room, behind the grand piano, slid it all the way up, then climbed out onto the grass. This was the dark spot, right here. I looked both ways, crouching down low, then closed the window and left a small stick in the frame, so it wouldn’t lock, and I could get back in later.

All the crewmen were standing at the front of the house, laughing together. I shook my head as I walked right past them in the dark and reached the point of the perimeter wall with a massive hedge in front. I squeezed through the bush and found my footing before climbing up the brick wall and over. Right on the other side was an army-green G-wagon. My face and my heart lit up.

He was standing outside the car, leaning against the hood, ankles crossed, one hand in pocket, the other holding a cigarette between his thumb and forefinger. God, could this man be any hotter?

He tossed the cig when he saw me, came forward, and helped me down the wall. He wasn’t smiling, though, like he normally was.

“Hey… what's wrong?” I asked.

Once he had me down the wall, he took me by the waist and swung me around, pinning me against the car.

“Hey, beautiful,” he said, then kissed me hard. I melted into it, swinging my arms around his neck and pulling myself up, so he picked me up by the ass and grinded his dick against me. I wrapped my leg around his calf and reciprocated the pressure, suddenly needing him desperately and wishing I’d worn a dress tonight of all nights. But shit, we couldn’t fuck out here. We had to get going.

Finally, though reluctantly for both of us, he broke the kiss and put his forehead against mine. “We should go.”

“Yeah.” I chuckled, feeling the cold night air biting my cheeks.

He put me down, smacking my ass as he opened the door, and I jumped up into the passenger seat. When he was in the driver's seat and we were on our way to God knows where, I finally asked again, “Are you okay, Hux?”

He broke out of his thoughts and smiled at me. “Yeah… sorry, babe. Had a bit of a rough day.”

“It’s okay. You wanna talk about it?”

After a moment of consideration, he sighed. “Antonio just reminded me today that my marriage to Viola is more important now than ever.”

“Why?”

“We had a meeting with all three families. Your father and Tony were there, too. The Rossis aren’t happy with the way the Morettis have handled things since my father died. Alfonso Rossi basically threatened war against us.”

“Shit,” I cursed, running my hands through my hair. “But what does that have to do with you and Viola?”

“We need to lock your family in as an ally, in case the Rossis do attack. Your father feels the same way since the Rossis have been threatening to attack him for years already.”

“Oh… I suppose that's why he’s been so adamant about arranging our marriages.”

“I suppose so, yes.” He sighed and squeezed my thigh. “But no matter what, I have you to myself tonight. I needed this.”

I smiled, his needing me was all I needed to forget about everything and everyone else. I turned onto my knee and reached across to kiss his cheek. He finally smiled, holding onto the arm I had across his chest. I took the opportunity to kiss his neck, then nibble on his ear.

“Hey now… we’ll have a lot more time for that when we get there.”

“Get where?” I asked, sinking back down into my seat.

“You’ll see.” He grinned. “Now, do me a favor and hop over into the back seat.”
