Kane rubbed a hand over his chin and nodded slowly.
“I’m going to bind with Seb, Ryan and Blake and then I need to fight him with their help,” I said.
“Not Jack?” Kane asked.
“I love you Kane and for your sake, I’ve been keeping my distance.”
He turned to me and looked at me, really looked at me and smiled. “You did that for me?”
I nodded and bit my lower lip. Kane was always fine with me being with my other men, but since Aria was born, he wanted more and more for us to be a little family and nobody else. And I would have loved that any other time because Kane was the doting father. He loved his daughter, probably more than he loved me.
He growled at me; I smiled. I forgot how in tune we were with each other sometimes.
“Jack’s magic is time and I know how powerful that would be the day I fight the dark king, especially if the war took place in the Lowerworld,” I said. Because deep down, I knew having Jack’s magic would be the key to defeating the dark king once and for all.
Kane narrowed his eyes at me.
“I’d be able to work everything out, see how he operates, his army, and then I’d turn back time and start the war with the knowledge I had.”
I shook my head because deep down I knew I was trying to convince him, but it was so hard, just looking at him with Aria in his arms and there was no way I wanted to die and not live my life with them. “I know you won’t follow me this time if I was to die,” I said, swallowing back a sob that came from nowhere.
“Lacey...” he whispered.
“I don’t want you to. One of us needs to be around for her, which means I don’t want you to fight in the war. I don’t want any chance of the two of us dying,” I said, running my fingertips over her cheek.
“Oh,” Kane said. He glanced at Aria and back at me. “I’m being selfish, Lacey. Do what you have to do.” I turned to Kane to see a tear slip from his eye and down to his cheek. “Leave him until the very end.”
I swallowed hard. “I know you don’t like it, but I need to do everything I can to stop him. I need to be the one who holds our daughter, not another woman who’ll enter your life if I die. Or worse, leave me, like my mother did to Clay.”
“I'm scared of losing you, Lacey.”
“Then you need to let me do this. I need you to help.”
“How?”
“I’m going to bind with Seb tomorrow, but I need you to put magnetic shields up. I want you to put one around the room.”
“Lacey, I can put them up around people, not buildings or rooms.”
“What about two people, me and Seb? Or around the bed.”
He nodded unconvincingly. “I can do that.”
“It is the only way Kane, I need more power, so do Seb, Ryan and Blake. We need to defeat him.”
Chapter 24
Kane
“I’mmeetingClayatthe park and then we're going to his for dinner,” I said with a sigh and kissed Lace on her lips. “I think he is hoping you’re going to be there.”
Lacey was bouncing Aria around the garage on her hip as I prepared the car with the baby bag and double checked the car seat was in place.
“I’ll visit him tomorrow.” She nodded. “If I see him first, I’m bound to slip up on what is happening. You know he won’t like what we’ve decided.” She hesitated as she looked at our baby. “And it has to be done, for all our sake and for her sake. I don’t want her having to deal with the dark king in the future.”
I sighed because I knew she was right, but it didn’t stop me hating she was going to bind with each of the men, starting with Seb tonight and I wished I didn’t know which one, but as only Seb was here.
To be honest, Seb wasn’t my genuine worry. He and I had shared Lacey throughout each of our lives. We did it without jealousy or arguments, but that was because most of the time, we were a partnership. Everything was equal, and it was easy until Blake came along.
