Shaking my head. “He had wings,” I said, hesitating a second. “I stroked them.”

“You fucking stroked them. What the fuck, Lacey?” Seb yelled.

“It was a shock. I never expected it. It’s not like I expected him to purr,” I said with a distinct note of sarcasm. “I was wondering if I was imagining it. They seemed familiar.”

Seb and Blake looked at each other before Seb twisted back to me. “You kissed him and now this. He’ll fucking read too much into it,” Seb said, his voice a little lower. “You’re playing with fire.”

“He saved me from the vampires, possibly saved my life,” I hushed. A shiver tingled its way down my spine and goose bumps chased over my arms.

“Stop!” Seb shouted, turning around and glaring at me. “You’d have saved your own life once you were out of the shackles. He wouldn’t have kept you in them forever.”

“Give her a break,” Blake said, his eyes glanced once to me and then back to the road.

I sighed and looked to the roof of the car and rubbed my fingertips over my temples. “I’m going to have a nap. Let me know when we’re back.”

“No, you’re not,” Seb demanded. “What did he sound like?”

“My captor, or the dark king?”

“The dark king. I’m not worried about the kings anymore. Now we know for sure we can’t trust them and one of us will be with you at all times.”

“Now I know I can’t trust anyone. I’ll be fine,” I argued.

“You’re not listening,” Seb yelled, and then sighed. “What did the dark king sound like?”

“Like you, like Blake, Like Kane, like Carter. You all have a similar sound. Like the three of you mixed up but a bit...”

“A bit what?” Seb pushed.

“A bit sexier.”

Blake burst out laughing. “Are you saying we don’t have sexy voices?”

I smirked at him. “I’m saying he has a swagger in his tone. It’s a confidence that oozes out of him.”

Seb twisted his head. “You’re not falling for him, are you?”

“No,” I said emphatically, shaking my head for extra emphasis. “I’m just being honest. Would you prefer I lied to you?”

“What did he say to you?” Seb raised his voice, getting crosser with me.

Remembering his mouth so close to my ear, his warm breath on my neck.

Can you wait two more years for me? I don’t know about you, but I’m struggling.

I sighed, remembering the kiss as he broke my barriers down. The slide of his tongue and my hand in his hair, dragging him closer to me. I blew out a shaky breath and closed my eyes.

“It’s a blur. I can’t remember more than I’ve told you. Why are you so interested in the dark king? The king of the vampires held me prisoner and not once have you asked what he wanted.”

“We’ll talk about it when we get back,” he hissed. “Have your sleep.”

“Okay, but remind me not to be honest about Dev... the dark king in the future. I’ll keep it all to myself.”

Seb’s head twisted in my direction. “What were you going to say?”

I shook my head.

“You were going to call him something else.”
