"So, what am I looking at here?" he asks. "Just a reckless driving charge?"

"Not quite." I rub the back of my neck to relieve some tension. "I took care of the stolen car aspect by paying off her roommate, but she also was drinking, and she left the scene."

"On her own?"

I wobble a hand back and forth then answer. "No."

He exhales slowly. "I raised you better than this."

I huff. "I know, and if it were anyone else, I would have made sure they stayed there, but I couldn't let her get arrested."

"What is so special about this damn girl?" he questions. "It's like you're not even pissed that she just destroyed your car. That thing is like your baby."

Leaning forward, I rest my elbows on my knees and run my hands over my face. "It's Tyeler. Davi's best friend."

"The one who testified against Jace?" I nod in response. "What the hell is she doing here?"

"I guess she blames me for Davi's death. She says that if it weren't for me, Davi wouldn't have been on the roof in the first place."

"But Davi—"

"I know," I interrupt, still unable to hear those words out loud. "But she doesn't know that."

A low groan rumbles in his throat. "I don't know, son. I'm thinking you should let her clean up her own messes. A little probation and community service might do her some good."

"Dad," I say firmly. "I love you, and you know I respect the hell out of you. But last year, I kept my mouth shut after finding out my best friend was going to get arrested because you told me to."

I don't think I'll ever forget the look on Jace's face when he found out I knew about the charges against him. I've never felt worse in my life than I did when he wouldn't talk to me for nearly a month.

"I wanted to tell him, but I didn't," I press. "You owe me this."

He stares at me intently for a moment and then sighs. "I'll see what I can do."

"Thank you," I say, relieved.

Standing up, I walk around to give my dad a hug and leave with a promise that he'll text me when it's settled, just so I don't have to worry or keep Tye in hiding. As I get outside and back into Jace's Mercedes Benz, I send him a quick text.

Me: She awake yet?

I barely have the car started and backing out of the driveway before he answers.

Jace: If she is, she hasn't come out here.

Perfect, because I have one more stop to make.

I CLIMB UP THEfew flights of stairs, hurrying down the hall until I reach my destination. My fist knocks on the door, and I say a silent prayer that someone is here. A heavy weight lifts when the door opens.

"What do you want?" Beverly mutters. "Tyeler isn't here, and I already told you I won't press charges."

"I'm just here to grab something," I tell her.

She rolls her eyes and steps aside. "Is it her things? Because if I never have to see her again, that would be great."

I make my way into the room and right there on her bed is exactly what I'm looking for.

Davi's diary.

No good can come from her having this thing, especially if Davi put her intentions in here. Nothing in here will give her the closure she's looking for, and the best thing I can do for her is take it.
