With his left hand, Dan reached up and slid his fingers between Pam’s legs. Not too close to her ass, but close enough, and he squeezed her upper thigh, talking to her like he was touching her arm. When she didn’t flinch, Rene knew they were lovers. Pam looked down at him with such adoration that Rene had to catch a sob before it turned into a wail. Dan and Pam were in love with each other. That was clear.
She quickly turned to run back to Dan’s house to gather up as much as she could and get out before he got home. Since he wasn’t expecting her for another seven hours, she filled her car with her belongings, stuffing her clothes into grocery bags and any receptacle she could find, including his laundry baskets. Anything she missed, she’d get later. Shaking, not crying, not yet anyway, she sent her mother a text.
Can I move back home? Will explain later.
Less than a minute passed.Come home.
She took one last look around his house; there was nothing there that was sentimental. She’d be glad to leave it behind.
In the car at the corner of Sea View, she stopped at a stop sign just as Lisa turned into the neighborhood, waving to her. When she pulled into the garage, Ryan came out to help her carry groceries inside.
“I just saw Rene, and she wasn’t looking too happy when I waved to her. She’s supposed to be at work today.”
“She was here, looking for Dan, about two hours ago,” Ryan said.
“Oh shit, you didn’t happen to call over at my mom’s, did you? He’s probably there.”
“No, I didn’t even think of it.”
Getting out her phone, she sent Dan a text.
Ryan said Rene was here about two hours ago, looking for you. I just saw her leaving the neighborhood, and she didn’t look too happy.
“What am I missing?” Ryan asked.
“Dan and my mother are in loveagain,” Lisa said.
“Why doesn’t anyone bother to tell me this stuff?”
“It’s for your own good, sweetheart. You’re the innocent one, then.”
Dan had just gotten out of the shower when he read Lisa’s text. He had a hot flash, and it wasn’t the water. Wrapping a towel around his waist, he went out into the bedroom. Naked with a sheet pulled up over her body, Pam lay on her side, sleeping.
“Pam,” he said, kissing her. She opened her eyes and lifted a corner of his towel, making him chuckle. “Lisa just sent me a text that Rene was there looking for me. I’m going to run across the street.”
“Okay, you’d better get dressed.”
Exhaling, he laughed. “I will. I’ll tell her tonight. Can I come back?”
“Of course.” She sat up, pulling the sheet up over her breasts. “I’m sorry.”
“No. Don’t be. I’m sorry I let it go on so long without being honest with her.”
Watching him dressing, his body so exquisite, being with him was worth the lapse in morality. Insanity. She was awful for having betrayed Jack’s niece.Aunt Pamwas a slut.
“I love you, Dan.”
“And I love you.”
Kissing Pam goodbye one more time, he left her bedroom.
The house was dark. Letting himself in, the only belongings she had were in the bedroom. He’d never invited her to make herself at home, and she didn’t offer to change anything or add any decorative elements. In the bedroom, her suitcases were gone, her dresser was empty, the drawers she used in the bathroom were empty, too. Looking around, it was with a sense of relief that she was gone.
But he wasn’t a complete heel, so he sent her a text.I’m sorry. I guess you figured it out.
Her answer embarrassed him.I saw you on the beach, and when you slipped your hand between her legs, I figured you were sleeping with her.Cringing, it was too late to take it back. But he didn’t regret any of it. He loved Pam, as he always had. He let Rene have the last word.
All he could think of was returning to Pam’s house, so he called her.
