She glanced swiftly from Kendra, plucked a bit of the chewy mix from the pot, and ate it. “Tastes great.”

Abi threw in a handful of chopped nuts and stirred. “Think apple tart with a flapjack topping.”

“Did you pre-bake the pastry?” Sarah asked.

“Duh. Yes, Mum, I pre-baked the pastry.”

Sarah kissed her daughter on the back of the head. “Good girl,” she said, her palms clammy and her heart racing.

“Kendra, can I get you a drink?”

“I’m fine, thanks. I came early because there’s more papers for you.” She pointed to the pile on the side.

Sarah went to the cupboard and pulled out a glass. Sod the idea of staying completely sober. She needed something to numb these feelings, or she wouldn’t be able to concentrate on anything this evening. She poured herself a double gin and added a little tonic. “You sure you don’t want one?”

“Okay.” Kendra smiled and turned to Abi. “Hey, how did your project go down at school?”

“Mark, do you want a gin?” Sarah shouted through to the living room.

“Sure.”

“It was the best in the class,” Abi said.

“Good job,” Kendra said and bumped fists with her.

“That’s brilliant, Abs.” Sarah should have asked Abi earlier in the week, but she’d been rammed with work and then distracted by Kendra, and it had completely slipped her mind. She took a longer drink and topped her glass up before she made the other two their drinks.

She picked up the pile of papers, and the top sheets slipped from her arms and fell to the floor. Kendra picked them up and held them towards her. Sarah locked eyes with her and froze.

“Do you need a hand?” Kendra asked.

She stared at the papers in Kendra’s hand and imagined what Kendra would be able to do to her with it. “Thanks,” she said.

“Let me take some.”

Kendra took half of the documents from her grasp, seemingly unaffected by the electric energy that Sarah felt between them.

“Where’s your office?”

“This way.” Sarah grabbed her drink and headed up the stairs, with Kendra following behind.

“Nice,” Kendra said, looking around the room. “I’m surprised you don’t work here every day.”

Sarah flicked on the lights, dumped the papers on her desk, and closed the blinds at the window.

Kendra smiled. She looked towards the closed door and back at Sarah. “You want to talk about what happened?”

Sarah shook her head and took a step closer to Kendra. “I don’t do anything unless it’s well thought through, Kendra.” She ran her finger down the front of Kendra’s shirt, between her breasts and down to her crotch. “Fluorescent blue is a little less loud than the pink,” she said and smiled. “I like it.”

Kendra grabbed Sarah’s free hand and tugged her closer until their bodies touched. She pressed her leg between Sarah’s and wrapped her arm around Sarah’s waist.

Sarah closed her eyes. “I love the feel of you,” Sarah whispered, and Kendra’s breath kissed her face, and Kendra’s warm lips met hers. The softness became firm, and as quickly as it had started, Kendra stopped and took a pace back. “Does this scare you?” Sarah asked.

Kendra shook her head. “I want to fuck you but not here.”

Sarah took a deep breath. She stroked Kendra’s cheek, and Kendra kissed her fingers. “You’re so fucking sexy,” she whispered.

“I’ve arranged a couple of meetings for you next Friday. One is with EnBus, as they’re at the heart of the fracking issue. The other is with Chalkstone Zoo.” She smiled.
