I stuck out my tongue at him and pointedly turned away, exchanging a wicked smile with Corinne. So quickly, it seemed like she’d forgiven me, reminding me just how grateful I was for her friendship. But what to tell her? Could I tell her the truth? Then again, Leo would step in if I tried divulging more than I should. Maybe he was useful, after all.
“I need you to swear on your life that you won’t tell another soul,” I explained to Corinne, which also would have signaled to Leo that an info dump was coming. Any secrets the Lucas wanted kept were about to be spilled.
“Okay…?” Corinne replied, confused.
When Leo made no move to interfere, I plowed on. “It’s sort of… life and death. They wouldn’t take kindly to someone knowing all of this without being part of thefamily.”
“Family?” Corinne tilted her head, and I gave her a stern look so that she knew I was serious. “Okay. Okay. My lips are sealed.” Corinne gestured zipping her mouth shut.
And then her eyes went wider and wider while I spilled all the beans. I told her about my father, and who the Lucas were, and where I had been. I told her about the wedding and felt myself tearing up because Corinne couldn’t be there.
She shoved a cube of potato in her mouth when she was finally able to close her jaw.
“So, yeah, things might get a little hairy, but I’ve convinced Dom to let me get back to work in the meantime. I missed you, honey. I’m sorry that I couldn’t talk to you. I wanted to, but my hands were tied.”
“I had no idea. All I kept thinking was that you had to come back… eventually.”
“And now I’m back,” I said with a soft smile and placed my hand on top of hers.
Leo cleared his throat, and when we glanced up at him, he waggled his brows.
Corinne leaned in close. “And who is that sexy as hell hunk following you everywhere you go? Because wow, does he pull off that monochrome fit. All he needs are some leather gloves, and I’m all his.”
I laughed. Maybe Corinne and Leo would be a good fit. They both seemed to have their minds permanently stuck in the gutter.
“That’s my brother-in-law, you horny creep.”
We laughed, but then I turned serious one last time. I had to make sure. “Are you still mad at me, hon?”
She shook her head. “I don’t even know what to say, but I’m sorry, Fallon. I’m sorry you got caught up in all of this.”
She polished off the potato salad. “Have you guys… you know… doneityet?”
My cheeks went scarlet red.
“Yes,” I admitted, but that was the only detail she was getting.
“He was packing, wasn’t he?” She winked.
“You betcha.” I bit my lip as flash floods of his naked body filled my mind.
“I mean, at least he’s good in the sack. I know that look on your face.”
“What look?”
She laughed. “Tell me you’re not turned on just thinking about him.”
I crossed my arms over my chest. “No, I am not.”
Corinne shook her head, chuckling. “So, I know there’s no way out. And that sucks. But maybe it won’t be so bad. You might just... start enjoying each other’s company if you give it some time. It sounds like you’ve got plenty of heat in the sack,” she said, waggling her brows.
“I don’t know. It’s confusing. I have no idea what I feel for him. I’m all over the place.”
“I’ll be here for you, honey,” she said, pulling my hand into hers. “We’ll get through this together.”
Our break was over, and we got back to work. Telling Corinne the truth lifted the weight of the world off my shoulders. My mind felt clearer, and after just one day spent with her, I didn’t feel so alone anymore.
