"Would you both shut up," J'avet growled over his shoulder. "You'll draw every nanobot on the ship to our location."
A rumble passed through the ship the moment he'd finished speaking, as though the words needed an exclamation mark.
"What the—" I said under my breath.
"Hurry," J'avet snapped.
I made a mental note to stay off ships once we reached Agus. If we ever did.
We reached the command area and J'avet pressed the code to open the door. It slid open with almost ominous ease.
Slowly, and with eyes and ears open, we stepped inside. Nothing moved. Nothing made a sound except blood in my ears and the usual thrum of the engines.
I startled when the door whispered shut behind us, closing us in.
I had bad feelings before, but not like this. Fear crept up my skin like smoke.
When J'avet and Zarex moved forward slowly, I followed.

The only soundwas my own breathing.
In.
Out.
In.
Out.
I concentrated on that to keep myself from imagining any number of things. We might have stepped into a room full of people going about their jobs as normal. The last time I was in here, it was quiet.
But... was itthisquiet? I couldn't remember.
"The bridge is this way," J'avet whispered.
I barely heard the words, but his voice sounded loud.
I winced and nodded.
J'avet gestured for me to stay back and for Zarex to move forward with him.
Zarex nodded. He moved the blaster into his other hand. His face was drawn, brow creased in a deep frown. Worried, but not scared. Or scared, but hiding it well. He had probably faced worse than this before. What, I had no idea. I barely knew the man. When this was over, we'd have to sit down for a coffee and a nice chat. Did he even like coffee? That was another on a long list of things I wanted to find out.
I tiptoed after them, keeping what I hoped was a safe distance. I glanced into the rooms we passed, the few whose doors stood open. An administration room full of screens, another with a desk. A third held boxes piled on top of each other. Empty or full, I couldn't tell.
The corridor widened.
A shuffling sound came from somewhere up ahead.
We froze.
When no further sound came, we moved forward again. My whole body was so tense it almost hurt. Not in a good way. An orgasm wouldn't release this pressure.
"I smell blood," J'avet whispered.
My gaze swivelled to stare at him. What was he, a space vampire? That would explain why he was such a broody asshole. Luckily, only his eyes shone and not the rest of him. Well, he could stay the fuck away from my blood. My neck on the other hand…
