Danec, son of Jaek.

Unknown.

Danec…

"What the fuck?" Slek muttered. "It's as if the computer can recognise you, then it can't. You do exist, right?" The side of his mouth turned up, but he sounded worried.

Danec shot him a dark look, but he didn't seem certain himself. "I think I do," he replied. "If I don't, you're talking to yourself."

I snorted.

Slek grinned. "Good point. I might be a little crazy, but I'm notthatcrazy. Yet." He blew out a short breath through pursed lips. "I have no idea why the computer is acting like this. I've never seen anything like it. I'll speak to the computer gwarps and see if they have a solution. In the meantime, you might need help getting food and drinks."

"I can help," I said immediately. "Until we can get this worked out." I chewed my lip. "This can't just be happening to him, right?"

"Probably not," Slek agreed. "If it's a glitch, there will be several. It might even spread during the journey."

"That's something to look forward to." I grimaced.

Slek shrugged. "The gwarps will be all over it as soon as they can. We can't let Danny here go thirsty." He clapped Danec hard on the shoulder.

Danec winced. "Ouch."

"Sorry." Slek patted him more gently.

"Do you think the scanner would recognise him?" I asked suddenly.

When they both looked at me in confusion, I added, "The new one in the infirmary. It does full body scans. If it doesn't work for him and he gets injured…"

Danec's eyes widened.

"Don't worry," I said quickly, "there's plenty of old fashioned ways to diagnose injury."

"Like you bitching about it," Slek said. "Just remember if you break your arms, Edie is really good at moistening cocks."

I swatted his arm. "I was doing my job."

"I'll keep that in mind," Danec said. "What if I don't break my arms?"

"I'm sure if you asked nicely…" Slek said.

"So anyway," I interrupted, "let's go and do that scan."

"Fine." Danec stood, but his pants bulged. "Then I need to get some study done."

"I'm sure Edie will help you with that too," Slek said as he shut down the computer.

Danec blushed.

I just rolled my eyes at Slek and took Danec's hand as we left the room. "I'm sure we'll figure this out," I said softly. "They'll reboot the computer or something, and it'll be sorted." A ship's computer was probably quite different to a personal one and a reboot in space sounded like a bad idea, but I could be wrong.

"Yes, I know," Danec said. "It's just f-frustrating. If I can't access the computer properly, I'll h-have trouble with my studies. I don't want to fail because of a glitch."

I squeezed his hand. "I'm sure they would understand." I wasn't certain of that, to be honest. If someone like J'avet was in charge, he would get angry, if only for the sake of it.

"We'll let Zarex know and he can send word if necessary," I assured him.
