And you know what? It would be.

Chapter Sixty-Five

Dax

Seraphinaswayed, andherlong hind legs fell backward, all while the tree branch used its branches to mold to her body. I shifted back into human form while the branches gently put her to the ground. Her head fell to the side, her body cracking and putting her in her human state.

Breathing deeply, I kept her there on the forest floor, the light hovering around her body.

“That’s crazy,” Dimitri spoke while his hand rubbed Seraphina’s face. Dimitri had a few scratches from the scuffle before we headed into the woods. The poisoned claws did their job. It slowed our healing abilities, not by much, but having them finally heal and close on their own was a bitch.

The light faded around Seraphina’s body. Dimitri picked up Seraphina while I went to pick up the remaining parts of the Kitsune. He was down to just hunks of meat. I had to carry the bloodied pieces back to the pack house. I wasn’t sure if Kitsunes could be ultimately killed just by a good mauling and I would not give it any chances to regenerate.

Once we arrived, Seraphina had fallen asleep in Dimitri’s arms. Dimitri and I took large breaths in and heaved them out heavily. Both looking at each other, we laughed at each other. “Who the hell knew it would all end up like this?” I put my arm around my brother’s shoulder. “The past six or seven months had been hard. For the first time in our lives, we were without our family, friends and then stuck in a damn dog pound for a good portion of it.

“We get rescued by our mate only to find out she’s being chased, and it all came around a full circle with a bunch of supernaturals nipping at her heels. She’s been through some shit.”

“Yeah, she has,” Dimitri said out loud.

“Quit diggin’ in my head, man.” I wanted to push him, but the thought of Seraphina waking up had me hold back.

The blood parts of the Kitsune stank. Mind-linking Melody, she ran over as quickly as she could. “Burn it,” she panted. “Just like Vampires, rip them apart and throw it in the fire.” The enormous bonfire in the middle of the courtyard, which used to be nothing but logs and sticks, was now full of bodies. The fire is no longer yellow and orange but blue, purple and green. Souls of the dead would seep down into the Earth for Hades to deal with. Stupid mother fuckers.

Lonato walked forward, covered in blood. There didn’t seem to be any scratches on him, just dried blood and a few bruises. “Alpha request to go see my mate,” his voice was low, carried with heavy sorrow. My hand gripped his shoulder.

“Of course, go to her, hell, make it official.” Lonato’s lips ticked, trying not to smile.

“Slow and steady, Alpha. Slow and steady.” Lonato backed away, walking up the pack house steps.

“This is so gross,” mom whined. Her feet were bare and was trying to tiptoe over the streams of blood. “There wasn’t this much the last time we battled, was there? Or did I block that memory out?” Her eyes looked up to dad, a smile in greeting her. Dad swept in and picked up mom who cuddled into his chest.

“You boys alright? Did you get him?” Mom’s face brightened.

“Obviously.” I rolled my eyes. Dad’s growl had me backing up slightly, but it was mom’s stare that had me really begging for mercy. “I’m sorry, yes mom.”

“I don’t care if we all have been fighting. You still watch your mouth,” she snapped. “Same for you,” she pointed to dad.

“I did nothing,” he pleaded with her. “I’ve been good,” dad pouted. Oh, shit, here we go.

“You have,” mom wiped away blood dripping down his forehead.

“Enough for?” he mumbled. “Teatime?” Mom burst into a fit of laughter while the rest of us groaned. Melody began gagging, and Dimitri and I walked away. Guess it had been over four hours since they found a closet.

“I need numbers,” I yelled out to Marcus, who was writing on a pad of paper. He licked his fingers, flipping through the pages.

“We only lost five.” Marcus rolled his lips, giving a smack. “They were mateless, living until their children were old enough so no children were left behind. The blood bags healed everyone at an alarming rate. Zoey said she only had to use half a bag for each wolf and the bodies regenerated enough to make more of it. We were lucky, real lucky.”

Cyrene was laying in Soren’s arms, the large tattoo on his back held her coven symbol and her initials. The thing was damn huge, but I was more impressed with the double marking Soren gave her. He will be one possessive Wolf with that.

“Alphas, Soren bowed his head, Cyrene in his arms. “My mate is still weak. I don’t think she can open the portal to let the others home.”

“That’s alright,” looking back at Dimitri. “I think it would be best to clean up before the kids come back. You did well. Thanks for waking up. How do you feel?” Soren shook his head, his eyes lingering at the glowing fire.

“Like my body is a raging bolt of electricity. I don’t know if I want to explode with rage or nuzzle into my mate. I feel guilty. My mate was fighting alone while I slept. Then when I woke up, I couldn’t get out of the room because she put a damn barrier around it.” His eyes flickered from his Wolf's back and forth. “But then her magic came to me. I could get out and protect her.” His head went into her neck. “To answer your question, I’ll be okay,” he chuckled.

The rest of the night was spent cleaning up the bodies. Any bodies in the house that needed to be thrown into the fire were dealt with. Hoses were brought into the pack house, spraying down every surface with water and bleach as it dripped down the stairs to the ground outside.

The night went on. We helped supervise and helped clean, trading Seraphina off back and forth doing so. “Dax?” Seraphina stirred in my arms. I had a blanket covering us, sitting on the only clean surface, a small bench at the edge of the woods. The stars came out from behind the clouds. The terrible smell of burning bodies were deteriorating and my mate was feeling more rested.
