"Then fine, we do it the human way," I whispered. "Make him jealous. Find an unmated Wolf to play along. He couldn't touch a human, but he can show he's pissed with other Wolves, right?" Zoey's lips curled into a smile.
"I think you are on to something," her cheeks flushed. "But who would want to play my boyfriend? They would have to know what we were doing?"
My eyes scanned the room; Dax was still talking to Alpha Big Claw in a heated conversation. Unmated warriors were throwing food and arm wrestling on the table. Several omegas started to help with the food clean-up until Soren tapped me on my shoulder. "What are you ladies doing? You look like you are up to something.” Soren sat down next to Zoey, knowing he was already under Dax's gaze across the room. No unmated males can touch me.
Zoey's eyes lit up, and pointed to Soren. "What about Soren?" She chirped. "He's Lonato's second; it would be perfect!" I shook my head.
"No, he can't do it." Soren had accepted a rejection from his mate earlier today. I couldn't possibly ask him to help. I was already pushing Zoey to find Lonato after a devastating blow about Trey, and now getting Soren's feelings involved would become too messy.
Maybe it was just a bad idea.
"No, Zoey," I repeated. "Just no. Forget it." Zoey frowned.
"What's going on?" Soren stepped in, seeing the tension.
"Seraphina thinks that Lonato is my mate," I groaned. My own mates were going to find out I was butting in where I shouldn't be. "She thinks I should go touch him to find out, but I can't. Seraphina says we should make him jealous until he goes crazy." Zoey cackled.
I've created a monster.
Zoey fluttered her eyes at Soren. The thoughts of Trey were long gone, and now the obsession with finding out if Lonato was her mate was there. I had to be correct. Otherwise, I might crush the heart of my only friend for a second time.
"Soren, no, you don't have-"
"I'll do it," Soren interrupted. He secretly glanced over at Lonato's table. Lonato remained stoic, but the grip on his drink said otherwise. He didn't like Soren so close. "This is almost too easy," Soren put his arm around Zoey, giving me a wink in return. "This would be a great distraction for me."
I uncomfortably shifted in my seat, praying to any higher authority that this didn't blow up in my face. If I couldn't feel more uncomfortable, I felt my mate's hand rest on my shoulder. His face contorted with apprehension until he sat at my side.
"Seraphina," he whispered. "I don't want to alarm you, but Dimitri hasn't come back yet." My eyes dilated; my Dario didn't get to him, did he? "I can't mind-link him, he is either blocking me out, or something is keeping him out. He's safe, I would feel him if he was in any pain, but Alpha Big Claw is getting worried since the sun is setting." My hand gripped Dax's while he looked down into my lap. "We won't be able to send trackers out since the territory is under lockdown at night. It is just too dangerous until a powerful Witch comes in to help Tua put a ward up. He may be out for the night."
My stomach dropped. Dimitri was out of the territory, and no one knew where he was, and now no help would come to him until morning. That wasn't going to do; we weren't held to this pack, were we?
"Then that means we go find his sorry ass and drag him back here," I spat.
Chapter Thirty-Nine
Seraphina
Igroundmyheelinto the ground, Dax gave a look of no questioning of his authority, but hell, I was going to do what I could to get Dimitri back. Who knows what lurked outside the territory with my father and a bunch of rogue supernaturals wandering about? Dimitri could be hurt, and Dax may not realize it. He could be telling me a little fib just to make me feel better!
"Let's go," I huffed, walking past Dax. I felt his body turn while he growled out at me. "Seraphina, no," the wolves in the room stood still. Dax’s voice was quiet but radiated a power I had not felt before. It was authoritative and was meant to stop me in my tracks. It certainly stopped everyone else, but not me. I wasn't going to succumb to a Werewolf temper tantrum.
"Excuse me?" I turned. Wolves in the room duct their heads lower, showing their neck. Dax had more power than I realized if everyone in the room stopped at his every word. Dax's strides were smooth as he met me from the ten feet I had gotten away from him.
"I said, no. We are to stay here until first light. Dimitri can handle himself; he's an Alpha and has been trained in situations such as this." My eyes narrowed, using my index finger, I tapped his chest.
"Well, his mate is here now, and I'm going to worry. I'll get in my car and drive to town, see if we can find the truck he borrowed."
I turned again, only to have my upper arm grabbed onto by Dax's large hands.
"You will stay here with the rest of us. You are the most at risk; why would I let you leave?" Wolves began to slip out of the room, the confrontation becoming too great. Zoey sat by Soren, who still had his arm around her. From my peripheral vision, Zoey winked at me. My heart slowed, thinking of what she had planned.
My shoulders slumped visibly to Dax. I was trying to admit defeat by my physical movements. "I'm just worried about him, Dax. What if the mafia finds him?" My voice caught in my throat; it wasn't acting; I really was concerned for my mate. Dax pulled me closer, kissing the top of my head.
"He will be fine, trust me. In fact, he is probably distracted trying to come up with a perfect date for you. I hugged Dax, still upset that Dimitri wasn’t with us.
"Let's get you back to the room; I'll go do border patrol with the pack and see if I can sense him, alright?" I nodded, sneaking a peek at Zoey, who only pinched her lips together that were trying to smile.
Dax had stripped to just basketball shorts while explaining the 'rules.' "Do not leave this room, Seraphina." I was laying on the bed, my head propped up by my palm, rolling my eyes as he spouts off something new and obscured to say. Sure, he was a good guy, making sure I don't get taken away and back to my so-called 'dad.' I thought I had proved myself earlier, I beat the tail of some she-Wolf that was supposed to be the strongest warrior, and now I'm stuck in a room. I could be out helping. I growled silently to myself, mumbling obscenities about how I could kick Dax's ass.
