Quickly,I head inside and try to act normal. Hunter can’t suspect a thing, it’s better this way for both of us.
I swallow hard as he looks up and smiles so sexily it makes my soul pant and he nods toward a steaming mug of coffee. “Here, shall we take it back to bed?”
I’m not sure I can do this but shrug, “If you like.”
There’s something in his eye that catches me off-guard as he looks at me with a hint of surprise and something else. Is it fear, am I overthinking this, but when I look again, he just stares at me as he’s always done? That devastating look that sets fire to my panties. If I had any on, that is.
He reaches for me as soon as I get close and his hands rest on either side of my hips as he lifts me onto the counter.
My arms wrap around him as he kisses me so tenderly it makes me want to cry like a baby, and this time as I kiss him back, it feels a lot like goodbye.
How can a situation change so quickly on the tap of a phone? It just doesn’t seem right, and yet as I kiss Hunter, my life flashes before my eyes. Not the life before I met him, the one I could have had with him. Our future that we spoke about at great length. A fairy story, a promise of a normal life, a future.
It’s true that one day someone will walk into your life and remind you why it never worked out with anyone else. Hunter is that man because until I met him, there was never anyone I wanted to share my life with. Since meeting him, everything made sense. My past, present and my future counted for something and with one phone call that future has been so cruelly ripped from me, reminding that I had no right to think I deserved different.
Just picturing the massive operation that is now swinging into place as a result of my text makes my legs shake as I rely on adrenalin to get me through.
Hunter can’t suspect a thing because I couldn’t bear to see the look in his eye when he realizes its game over.
