“I don’t have one, surprise me.”

“Consider it done already.”

“So - Chase, what do you think he’ll make of it when you tell him you’re not going back?”

For a moment the conversation stops and I stare at her with determination.

She appears a little taken aback and whispers, “When did we decide this?”

“The minute you walked into my office.”

“Liar.” She smiles slowly, but I see the happiness in her eyes and know she feels the same. “How will that work, though?”

“We’ll make it work. If you feel the urge to murder anyone, probably me most days, have a word with your president and I’m sure he’ll give you someone to play with. But your nights are mine, always mine and your days too if I had my way.”

“You would really let me just take off and carry on with my profession; you’re a sick bastard, Hunter Blake.”

She laughs and I enjoy seeing this relaxed Lexi who doesn’t appear to have a worry in her pretty little head.

“So back to Chase. Do you think he’ll approve?”

She reaches across the table and as our hands connect, she whispers, “How could he not approve of you, Hunter, you make me happy, it’s all he wants? Mind you, he may just interrogate you for a while, not that he will threaten you and all that shit. He knows I’m more than capable of taking care of myself. My heart is a little different though, it’s not as tough as I am and can’t take another knock. That concerns me and only when I know you mean everything you say, will I give mine wholly to you.”

Even though I know exactly why she feels the need to tell me that, it still doesn’t make it any easier to hear and I stare at her long and hard and say with determination, “I will spend the rest of my life proving how much I love you, Lexi, you have my word on that.”
