Gamble’s body had a mind of its own, and he slipped in right behind Spooky. There were questions piling up in his head, like how in the fuck did the familiar have the passcode to Arden’s space? Or, more importantly, why was he sneaking into the dragon’s lair?
Didn’t Spooky know dragons were notorious for being territorial? They hated their space being infiltrated.
But there was Spooky tail up in the air and moving around the place as if he’d been there plenty of times. Gamble swallowed thickly the further they walked in. Unlike the floor below, there were only two doors, one was Arden’s office, and the other was his living space.
Gamble expected Spooky to go to the dragon’s office. Maybe he’d been called up there like Micha, but Spooky jumped up and opened the other door. Why wasn’t it locked?
Gamble had some security issues with what was happening, but he couldn’t find it in him to stop Spooky just yet. Instead, he tiptoed right behind the cat as he pushed the door open and went in.
He should turn around right that second. But Gamble followed and stayed glued to the wall working his illusion the entire time. It was hard when his heart was beating out of rhythm, and his mind was still a little hazy.
The place was bigger than Gamble would have thought; it was easily six of their rooms put together. A living room area with a kitchenette stood off to one side. But what took up most of the space was the bed.
Spooky hopped right on it and disappeared under the covers, leaving Gamble standing there in sheer shock. What the hell? He’d seen Spooky flirt with Arden, but Arden shot him down every time from what he could tell. So why was he in his bed?
Gamble took in the place, and he didn’t see Arden, but that only made his heart beat faster. He needed to get out of there before the dragon appeared out of nowhere. Gamble wasn’t sure what he would do, but he wasn’t willing to test his new boss. Arden might not be the head of a mafia family, but it didn’t mean he was any less dangerous.
The cover rustled again, and his gaze went over to Spooky instantly as a small hill moved around.
“What are you doing?” Gamble slapped his hand over his mouth. Damn it; he hadn’t meant to say anything out loud.
Spooky’s head popped up from under the blankets, and his eyes went wide as he let out a cute little meow.
No, not cute. He is the devil.
Gamble shook his head and moved toward the door but Spooky’s gaze tracked him. Was his illusion down? Gamble still felt his magic wrapped around himself, but Spooky could clearly see him. This was why he didn’t want to be near the familiar, and yet here he was sneaking behind him.
Another meow came from Spooky, and Gamble groaned. He shushed him and looked around again before he let his illusion drop a little. Walking over to the bed, he glared down at Spooky. “What the fuck are you doing?” he ground out in a harsh whisper.
Spooky curled up on a pillow as if saying, going to bed, dumbass. Gamble glanced over at the door again and then fixed his glare back on Spooky. “We have to go.”
He grabbed Spooky, but the damn cat sank his claws into the pillow and refused to let it go.
“Are you trying to get us killed?”
Meow
Gamble’s left eye twitched. He couldn’t be serious, right? He let the familiar go, but the moment he heard the doorknob turn, he grabbed Spooky and ripped the pillow. Surrounding them both in his magic, he dropped to the floor.
Fuck, what should he do?Gamble rolled under the bed with Spooky in his arms and held his breath. Arden’s footsteps headed toward one of the doors in the room Gamble assumed was a bathroom.
Should he chance escaping? Spooky wiggled in his grasp but Gamble held him firmly. Just when he thought they might have a chance, the bathroom door opened up again.
“Come out here now,” Arden growled.
Gamble’s heart felt as if it was going to beat right out of his chest. The sound of it pounding almost drowned out every other sound. But when Arden growled that came through loud and fucking clear.
“Don’t have me repeat myself.”
Fuck, they were found out. Shit shit shit.Spooky slipped out of his grasp, and Gamble internally cursed the damn asshole.
“What have I told you about sneaking into my room?” Arden asked.
Meow.
“You cannot keep using theI’m only a cat thing. Get out, Spooky.”
Gamble covered his mouth; maybe Arden hadn’t realized he was there as well. He waited to hear the door open and close, but it didn’t. Instead a purr penetrated the air.
