“Honestly, I don’t give a fuck about him. I broke up with him last night before it happened.”

“You did? Is that why you just left like that? I tried coming after you because you looked like you’d just lost someone so close to you.”

She squeezed my hand, and I pulled it away.

“Ah yeah, that’s why.”

I hated keeping secrets from Lourde, especially one as big as this, but I couldn’t tell her now, could I?

I gazed up to find both Lourde and Olivia staring at me.

Lourde glanced between Olivia and me. “So if you’re not upset about Jake, who are you pining over?”

She widened her eyes. “Wait, was Mr. One Night at the party last night? Is that what’s going on here?”

A blush crept onto my cheeks. Fuck, I was the worst at keeping secrets. If I didn’t want to tell her, my face was doing a better job for me.

“I knew it!” She hit the table with her hands.

The server appeared carrying a tray of food and drinks, and I was thankful for the interruption.

“Three chocolate croissants and espressos.”

“Yes, yes, here, let me take that,” Lourde said quickly, taking the entire tray from the server and placing it down on our table.

“Thank you,” Olivia said.

The server realized he was interrupting us and turned on his heel.

Quickly, I grabbed the croissant, tearing off the end and shoving it in my mouth.

“No, no… you’re telling us who he is and why you’re so upset because it certainly is not over that jerk, Jake.”

As slow as possible, I chewed the flaky pastry, the buttery layers melting on my tongue. I swallowed down the last remaining piece of the pastry and reached for the rest when Lourde stopped me. “Speak.”

“I don’t think you’re going to like what I have to say,” I admitted sheepishly.

Olivia widened her eyes. “Oh shit, it’s Connor, isn’t it?”

Lourde flicked her head toward Olivia, who gave me a steely look.

“Good one,” Lourde barked out in laughter, but when her focus landed back on me, I remained still, my heart pounding in my ear.

Her face turned serious. “Is this true?” Lourde swallowed down. “Have you been sleeping with my brother?”

“Not since he got engaged.”

She removed her hand from mine and leaned back in her seat.

“I’m sorry, Lourde, it just happened.”

“Oh my God.” She remained stunned. “Did you know?” She turned to Olivia.

“No, but I saw the chemistry between them when we went out. It was undeniable.”

I sucked in a breath, not realizing I’d stopped.

“I swear I ended it as soon as he got engaged to Francesca.”
