“I’ve heard you at press conferences and media launches over the years.”
“Have you now?”
“It’s hard to ignore you, Connor.” I rolled my eyes. “And the otherannouncement, how are you feeling about that?”
“The announcement will happen, and I will feign my interest.”
“Feign?” His choice of words sent a flicker of excitement in my chest.
The timbre tone of my ringtone distracted me. I blinked and cast my eyes down, sliding my phone out of my purse. Jake’s name flashed up on the screen, and I gazed up to find Connor staring at the phone.
If he was jealous, he wasn’t showing it.
“I think you should take that.”
“Should I?” I shrugged, saying nothing more while the tone rang and rang out through the silence.
He was, after all, getting married. So maybe I should give what Jake and I had another chance.
I picked up the phone. “Hi.” My gaze settled on Connor’s, and he did not attempt to stop staring.
“Hun, you picked up. Thank you. Please don’t hang up.”
“I’m not, Jake.”
“Listen, I need to explain things. Can we meet at the Ivy tomorrow evening for a drink?”
“Sure,” I said, not believing the words coming out of my mouth.
I stared at Connor, who remained expressionless.
“Okay, great.” Jake sounded more surprised than I. “I’ll see you then,” he said before the phone went dead.
“Sounds promising,” he said.
“I guess so,” I replied, void of any emotion. “Well, good luck with everything, Connor,” I said while sliding my phone back into my bag.
I stepped forward toward the door, and I felt his presence behind me. When I reached for the handle, he stopped me, his hand circling my hip, making me turn.
“I have an idea.”
I turned to face him, hand on my hip.
“I can help you get Jake back.”
“What?” I sneered, narrowing my eyes.
“Not that you need help,” he backtracked.
“Damn right.”
“But what you don’t want is the same relationship you had before. Am I right?”
“Correct… how would you know what I want?”
“Please. Every girl wants the same things… orgasms, respect, love, and gifts.”
I laughed.
