“Lourde?”
“Yes, who else? Barrett’s with me. Can you let us up?”
“Barrett’s with you?”
“Yes, now let us up, weirdo.”
“It’s not a good time, guys.”
“Ah, we won’t be long, Connor. Now, could you just get over yourself and stop being rude?”
“Fuck, fine.”
Pressing the buzzer, he let them up.Shit!
“They’re coming up?” I said, exasperated.
“Didn’t I say to stay in the bedroom?” He stepped toward the elevator.
Fine.Quickly, I returned to his room, barely within earshot but out of view.
I heard the ping of the elevator doors, then two or three footsteps. Connor must have cut them off at the elevator.
“What are you doing here?” Connor asked.
“Well, hello to you too, brother.”
“Did you just get up?”
“No,” Connor said. “I’ve been working.”
“Hey,” I heard Barrett’s deep voice echo throughout the room and down the hallway, followed by what sounded like a handshake.
“Hello, Barrett.” Connor’s voice sounded like poison. He’d have to get over his sister’s deceit sooner or later.
“What can I do for you both? Like I said, I’m busy.”
“Well, that’s no way to treat us now,” Lourde tsked.
“Said by my sister, who was screwing my best friend behind my back?”
Damn.
There was a slight pause then Lourde cleared her throat.
“We were going to tell you, Connor. I’m sorry you found out the way you did, but you will just have to accept we’re not going anywhere. I love him, and Barrett loves me. Let’s just try to be adults about this.”
Another pause.God, this could go either way.
“Look, Connor, for what it’s worth, I’m sorry. I didn’t want you to find out like that. We had no intention of this happening. It just happened.”
“Yeah, tell me about it.” Connor sighed.
I couldn’t help but think by his sigh that Connor was talking about us. And if so, was he upset we were coming to an end?My pulse quickened at the thought.
“Where on earth is your housekeeper?”
Lourde’s voice was closer now, startling me.
