I gave him my location and also the location of the house where we found the kids, although by now, I would guess that Gage had already taken care of that.
After thanking him and getting off the phone, I turned around to find that the kids were being very efficient. The baby and Bobby were clean, with a towel diaper for one and a very large t-shirt for the other. Bobby was watching some cartoons on the television.
Eric was in the midst of taking a shower.
“Are you guys hungry?”
They all were starving, so I called down to the front desk and asked for a courtesy clerk to come to my room.
The kids all jumped as though they had been shot when he knocked.
I asked for identification and peeked through the eyehole before letting him in.
His eyes widened at the bedraggled looking bunch of kids sitting in front of me.
After pulling out my badge, I told him that the kids had just been rescued. Law enforcement would be arriving soon. However, the kids were hungry.
“Here is a hundred dollars. Can you go to the grocery store and pick up some ham, sliced cheese, bread, and a big bag of those mixed bags of chips? Also, can you buy some of those boxes of the Kool-aid quencher thingies?”
I prayed he knew what ‘thingies’ I meant.
“Also, I will need five bags of M&Ms,” I said.
He turned to leave.
Just as he headed out, two FBI agents arrived, along with a woman from social services who had diapers, formula, and a bottle.
“Badges please,” I said, blocking their way into my room.
A tall, thin man asked, “Agent Rainey Baylock?”
I nodded.
“I’m Agent Thomas Sanders, and this is my partner, Agent Myra Mendenhall.”
They both held out their badges.
A shorter, older woman stepped out from behind them. “My name is Sheila Lynn. I am a social worker.”
I nodded and let them inside.
By this time, the children had been in and out of the showers and were dressed in my t-shirts. They huddled together on the bed, fear clearly evident on their faces.
“My young friends, these are agents with the FBI. They are going to help you find your parents.”
All of them looked at Simone, as though they were looking to her for reassurance.
She nodded. “I told you that Aunt Rainey was with the FBI. She and her team were there to rescue us.”
Ms. Lynn bustled over to the baby and asked who had put the diaper on her. Dave raised his hand.
“You did a great job here,” she commended him. “Do you have a baby brother or sister at home that you help take care of?”
Her voice was very kind, and she quickly eased his fears. He cautiously approached her a bit, although he made sure he had a place to run if he sensed danger.
“Yes, ma’am. My mom had a baby boy not too long ago. His name is James.”
“That is awesome. I bet you help your mom a lot, don’t you?” she asked him.
