I handed him another twenty. He was working hard for the tips.

We had just finished setting up the cots when I heard the other three guys coming in. I peeked through the eyehole in the door and saw that I was right.

“Gentlemen, would you like to come in and meet the lovely people you saved tonight?”

Gage joined them, and they made an astonishing looking quartet. Not a single one of the men was under six foot seven. They were all exceptionally well built and handsome. They definitely looked formidable, and probably would have been intimidating if it wasn’t for their broad smiles.

“It is an absolute joy to meet you guys,” Gage said, holding out his hand for them to shake.

Shy smiles and handshakes, as well as thank-yous, filled the room.

“Simone, do you want to put the blankets and sheets on the cots? We are going to talk just outside the room for a minute, okay?”

She nodded, and her chest puffed up at being put in charge.

Ms. Lynn said that she would stay the night in the room with the kids. There would be two police officers posted outside of the door until the parents were brought in. Agents Sanders and Mendenhall would contact the parents and would also look into the situation with Kami’s and Bobby’s mother and see what they could find out.

With all that settled, I went back into the room.

“Okay, kiddos, you are all staying here tonight. The bed can have three people in it, probably Kami, Bobby, and Simone. The baby can get a crib, and everyone else can have a cot. Ms. Lynn is going to stay here tonight with you, and she gets the couch. Is that okay with everyone?”

They nodded, and then Eric asked, “What if the bad guys come back here to get us?”

I smiled at him and said, “Did you see those four big guys?”

He nodded.

“They have rooms on either side of this one. They will be listening all night long. Plus, two policemen will be outside the door all night.”

I saw the first glimmers of the dawn coming up.

“Actually, all morning,” I said, pointing in the direction of the first orange glows of the day.

They smiled, and I helped them climb into their beds.

“Can you leave the light on?” Kami asked.

“You bet, princess,” I said.

I gathered up my toiletries, some clothes, and headed out to find Lucian.

I was going to sleep in his room, and I didn’t care one iota who knew it.

Lucian was in Gage’s room with the other guys. I knocked on Gage’s door and was immediately admitted.

“You look like you have been through one heck of a storm, my friend,” Gage said, giving me a quick hug.

“I feel like I was flung under a train by a tornado. The train skidded to a stop all over me.”

They all smiled. They knew exactly what I was talking about.

Then, I walked over to Lucian, who looked as exhausted as I felt.

“I need the key to your room. Mine is occupied by very tired kids and their social worker. I am going to take a shower and sleep in your bed.”
