Jack's hands squeezed mine. "I want you to do whatever makes you happy. Hey, maybe there's a way to turn your knack for incredible appetizers into a business? Post the recipes online or something."
"I don't think there's any money in that." I paused. "Although, I've been gathering recipes and taking photos. Still, it wouldn't be a proper living."
"It's not about how much money you make. If you think spreading positivity through interesting snacks would make a tiny corner of the world a better place, do it. If you change your mind a year later and want to do something else, that's great too."
I sighed. "That sounds too easy."
Jack's chuckle was so sexy it was almost distracting. "Then do it with your dominant hand tied behind your back." Then he frowned.
"What is it?" I asked.
"It's odd that I don't even know if the girl I love is right- or left-handed."
"I'm right-handed."
"So am I."
Then I froze, replaying what he'd just said.
He smiled, leaning in to kiss my cheekbone on the way to my ear. "Yes. I love you, Grace. I realized that before we went into the pool house, but didn't want to freak you out by saying it so soon. But it's true."
It took me a moment to find enough air to speak. "I love you, too."
Jack's lips on mine made every stress disappear. There were still hundreds of questions, though.
"I just want you to be happy, baby. You're so young. You could travel, take another year of university. Whatever helps you figure out your purpose in life."
"I wouldn't want to travel without you."
He grinned. "I haven't taken much time off for years. I'll need to be at the office quite a bit for the next six months while things transition from Dan's way of doing things to mine, but after that, I can sometimes work on the road."
I searched those deep brown eyes. "And you really won't care if I want to work in a candle store? Or run a travel blog?"
"I want you to be happy and fulfilled," he said firmly. "I could coordinate my travel with you when I can, and when I can't, I'll look forward to your photos."
Jack really was completely open-minded. I've never dealt with anyone older than me who didn't want me to do what they thought was right instead of what I wanted to do myself.
"Would you like to come to my place?" he asked. It was strange seeing such a powerful man suddenly be so tentative. "If it's too soon, that's fine. But I'd really like us to get to know each other better." He leaned in to whisper, "As we fall madly in love."
My smile felt too big for my face. "Sure."
We went to the cashier and Jack paid my bill before I could stop him. Then he went over to the prize section and picked out a pink crystal bracelet, slipping it onto my wrist.
As we went outside to our cars, Jack said, "Just a warning that I'm going to want to spoil you, Grace. If I ever cross a line or make you uncomfortable, just tell me. Okay?"
"Absolutely." I spun the bracelet. "This is adorable. Thank you."
I followed him to his house, this time driving through the massive front gates. As we approached the house, I began to laugh. This was why Jack took me to the pool via the back way. He wanted me to know him better before I was dazzled by his wealth.
Our relationship was a bit out of order, and we were in love before we even knew each other properly, but we were both trying to do what was best for the other, and that was all that mattered.
As I pulled up in front, Jack jumped out to get my door. "Why are you laughing so hard?"
I had to wait until I could pull in some air. "You're worried about having a mid-life crisis, and shaking up your life in tacky ways. Meanwhile I'm so worried that I'm going to make the wrong life decisions that I'm unable to make any at all."
My hand waved in a wide circle to indicate the enormous house, the huge garage, and the gardens.
"But no matter what we do, I think we've got food and shelter covered. Everything else is gravy, right?"
Jack's rich laughter sounded even better with his arms around me. "You're right, baby. Everything else is bullshit. We've got you and me and Mrs. Henderson's meatloaf. We're already spoiled to bits."
