“You’re dating a rich lawyer. My last match dumped me.”
“Because you called him in the middle of the night and asked him to come to the police station to help you out of trouble because your ex-boyfriend, who happens to be a drug dealer, got you arrested.” Maybe she was that stupid. “My relationship has nothing to do with what’s going on in your life.”
“You’re right, I’m sorry. I’ve just been feeling down.”
“I get it.”
“So, things are moving forward with you and Julian, huh?”
“I think so.” Kayla didn’t want to be insensitive to Connie’s feelings.
“That’s pretty impressive.”
“What is?”
“You and the most popular guy in the place. I’ve been hanging out at the club for a few years. No one has been able to hook him. How did you do it?”
“I don’t know.” Kayla laughed. “We just clicked, I guess.”
“That’s great.”
She sensed the somber tone in Connie’s voice.
“Maybe I need to hit Sapphire and ask Blake to match me fast,” she said. “It will keep me away from Tim and help me forget Drew, my last match.”
“If that’s what you think will help.” Kayla knew that not only did Julian want her to stay away from Connie, but he wasn’t thrilled with her hanging out at the club either. Not after she had involved a match in her mess with Tim.
“Want to come with me tonight?’
Hell!
“I can’t, I’m sorry.”
“Julian?”
“Kind of.”
Kayla remembered what happened last time she showed up at Sapphire, and there was no way she was making that mistake twice. She wasn’t even afraid of the punishment. It was more out of respect. He’d asked her not to go there without him, and she didn’t want to go against his wishes. She also needed to discuss his request that she not see Connie. She understood his logic, but she was her friend and friends didn’t ditch one another.
“Why don’t we meet for dinner tonight?” Kayla asked. “You pick the place. My treat. I got a new job and all.”
“Thanks,” Connie said. “But I think I’ll pass.”
“You’re not going to see Tim, are you?”
“No, yourboyfrienddoesn’t have to worry about that.”
Icy much?
“I don’t ever want to see the inside of that police station again,” Connie quickly added.
“Good.”
“Talk to you later this week.”
“Are you sure you don’t want to get together?” Kayla didn’t like the vibe of this conversation.
“Yeah. Take care.”
