She wasn’t going to let this go.
“I threatened him with a sexual harassment lawsuit.”
“Why would you do that?”
“There’s something off about him.”
“You threatened to ruin a man’s career. He never did anything inappropriate to me. He asked me out a few times and he gave me the creeps, but that’s not sexual harassment.”
“He was your boss, and when you said no, that should have ended that. It was very inappropriate.”
“I never gave in because I had no interest in him. He didn’t push me that hard.”
“It was a threat.” He tried to brush it off. “We’re not filing any lawsuits at this time.”
“You told him you didn’t make idle threats. Did you have something on him?”
He stared at the street, debating on whether to answer her question.
“You had him investigated, didn’t you?”
“I may have looked into his past and found a few things I didn’t like. I’m sure you’re not the only woman at that station he’s propositioned. You weren’t there that long. He was starting out slow. That’s his pattern.”
“Whatever, it’s over.” She gazed out the window. “Your alpha display in there was unnecessary.”
“You’re mad at me for defending you?”
“I just didn’t think it needed to be done. It seemed out of character for you. Mitch wasn’t a threat to you. You’re more confident than that.”
“He got in my face and insinuated that I wasn’t the right guy for you.”
“You told him you would expose his past because you were jealous?”
“There was no reason for me to be jealous.” Why was she pressing him?
“No, I guess not.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” He entered the lot across from the restaurant, pulling into a spot before unbuckling his seatbelt to face her. “Look at me.”
She turned to face him, but she avoided his eyes.
“Why did you say that?” he asked.
“Jealously is an emotion reserved for people who care what the other is doing outside of the bedroom.” She still wouldn’t meet his gaze. “Not for people like us.”
“You think I don’t care?” How could he blame her? He’d made their whole relationship about sex. That’s what she had wanted. Wasn’t it?
“You said there was no reason to be jealous, so I don’t get why you would even waste your energy on Mitch. I planned to block and delete him from my contacts when I got home. You didn’t need to speak for me.”
“I said there was no reason to be jealous because I knew you weren’t interested in Mitch, not because I don’t care. I trust you completely. I know you’re devoted and committed to what we agreed upon. That’s why I’m not jealous. You’re right, I am too confident for that. The same way I trust that you’re as equally confident that I would never betray what we have.”
“I know.”
“Then why are we arguing?” He took her hand. “I don’t want to fight with you.”You’re far too precious to me. I can’t lose you. Tell her...
“When you introduced yourself as my boyfriend and then you were defending me against Mitch, well, it felt... I mean, I was confused.”
Confused? That was the perfect word to describe what he had been feeling for days. When it came to her nothing was normal. At least not his normal.
