“Boyfriend?” Mitch looked surprised.
“I’ll be right back.” Gina thumbed toward the restroom. “Can’t hold my beer.” She laughed as she headed toward the restroom.
Kayla had never been one of those women who tagged along when another girl was going to the bathroom. It seemed silly, but this time she wanted to make an exception. Before she could get up, Gina was already halfway to the restroom.
“You never mentioned a boyfriend.” Mitch smiled when the waitress set his beer in front of him.
Yuck! He’s checking out her boobs.
“And younevermention your wife, so...”
Mitch glanced around at the others who were engaged in conversation. No one paid them any attention.
“I was surprised when you gave your notice,” he said. “The station was a good opportunity for you. Your father pulled a lot of strings to get you in there.”
“My new job is a good career move too.”And hopefully I won’t have to deal with a married man asking me out every other day.
“That doesn’t seem like a very easy job to get.”
“What job is these days?” She looked around to see whose conversation she could jump in to, but everyone seemed so engaged with one another. There was no escaping Mitch at the moment.
“Tell me about this guy you’re seeing.”
“Why?”
“Maybe I want to make sure he’s respectable enough for you. Not some dirtbag who won’t treat you right.”
“Huh.” She laughed at the thought of him protecting her from Julian.
“What?”
“That’s odd coming from you.” Now that she was leaving and he was no longer her boss, she felt a little bolder in his presence. “You’ve been trying to get me to go out with you for months.”
“No.” He looked around, making sure no one was listening. “Inviting you for a drink is not the same as asking you out. We’re co-workers.”
“Do you think your wife would agree?” Wow, she hadn’t even finished her beer, but the truth was flowing freely. Giving her notice had made her bolder. Less worried about doing something to make Mitch create havoc on her professional life.
“We’re having a drink right now. Nothing inappropriate here.”
“This is different.” Thank God she wouldn’t have to deal with him after tonight. “We’re with a group of people. That’s not what you had intended all those other times.”
“Maybe not.” He chugged his beer. “I’m a guy.”
“I’m pretty sure all married men don’t ask other women out for drinks.”
“You’d be surprised.”
What a dick.
“Hey.” Gina sat back down. “What did I miss?”
“Kayla was just about to tell me about this guy she’s seeing. I wanted to make sure he is on the up-and-up.”
“Please, Mitch!” Gina rolled her eyes. “Are you really one to judge?”
“What is it with you two?” He set his beer down. “You act like I’m some kind of dog. I’m nice. I like to be friendly.”
“So, that’s what we’re calling it?” Lana, from the makeup room, chimed in.
