“You there?”

“Yeah, what’s the guy’s name?”

“Huh?” Jack sounded puzzled. “What’s that have to do with anything?”

“I’m just curious.” He needed that name.

“Mitch Hampton, I think. Kayla said it wasn’t a big deal. Just one more reason why she doesn’t like the place.”

“I get it.” Julian did a quick search on his computer for the asshole who was moving in on his girl. “She doesn’t need that bullshit. I have a couple of friends I can contact. Let me make some calls, and then I’ll get in touch with Kayla.”

“Thanks, I appreciate you doing this for me. I know my sister isn’t your problem.”

No, not my problem, but my responsibility.

“It’s nothing. I want to help her.”

“Do you need her cell number?”

“I have it.” He was too busy searching for Mitch Hampton to realize his mistake.

“You do?”

“Oh, well, she gave it to me the other day. I figured since we’re both living in the city, you know?”

“I appreciate that too. She could use another big brother to look out for her.”

Yeah, that’s just what she needs from me.

“I’ll be in touch,” Julian said. “Tell your beautiful wife I said hi.”

“I will. Thanks again for helping me with this.”

“No problem.” He ended the call.

Why hadn’t Kayla told him about Mitch? She didn’t have to put up with that kind of shit. Not at work. He’d make sure she never had to deal with that sleaze again.

He grabbed his cell and dialed his most trusted private investigator, the one he used for all his high-profile clients. Larson Elliot was a master. He was quick, efficient, and never disappointed.

“Julian,” Larson answered the call. “What can I do for you?”

“I need a background check on a Mitch Hampton. He’s a producer over at Channel Five.”

“Sure, what sort of stuff do you want and how fast?”

“I want the basics by the end of business today, and do a little digging to see if he has any weak spots or skeletons I need to know about. I may have to use them at a later date.”

“I’m on it,” Larson said. “I’ll email a profile to you in a few hours.”

“Thanks.”

He had a few options for Kayla’s new job, but there was one prospect that jumped out at him immediately. He buzzed Chloe.

“Yes, Mr. Anders.”

“See if you can get me Judge Cooper on the line. He may be in court this morning, but ask someone on his staff to give me a call when they can.”

“Yes, sir. I’ll get right on that.”
