“What CEO of a Fortune 500 would?” Not only did they have to worry about Connie’s rap sheet, but now they would have to deal with an irate client.
“He’s furious that I would have hooked him up with her.”
“We’ll worry about that later.”
Julian had mentioned more than once that he didn’t trust Connie. He’d become more tolerant of her lately because Kayla seemed to like her. If Kayla was happy, then that was good enough for him. But he should have gone with his instincts. Connie had been hanging around the club for far too many years and had never found anyone she was interested in. Most people grew tired of the platinum package after a year and often requested to be matched with a more permanent arrangement.
“I’m headed to the station now.,” Blake informed him. “Can you meet me? I’ll post bail if needed. I don’t want her in there any longer than necessary. In case she starts blabbing about our business.”
“I’ll be there as soon as I can.”
When he ended the call, he turned to find Kayla sitting up and stretching her back. The sheet had fallen to her waist, revealing her creamy breasts to him. His cock let him know it was very much aware of her presence. He’d much rather be clamping her nipples and watching her ride him than heading out into the cold to the police station to bail out Blake’s latest train wreck. His cousin had a weak spot for good-looking women who were willing to date men that would make him a lot of money.
“Is everything okay?” Her voice was soft and sleepy.
“Just a little trouble I need to take care of.”
“Oh?”
“I need to go to the police station.”
“A client?”
“Not one from my law firm.” He saw no sense in withholding the truth. Connie would probably call Kayla the moment she was released. “Connie needs some assistance.”
“What’s wrong?” She moved to the edge of the bed, her naked form exposed and begging him to take her.
“She seems to have gotten mixed up with an ex who the police may have been after.”
“Tim?”
Oh, no.He’d be ordering Kayla to stay far away from Connie after he cleaned this mess up. Was ordering too strong of a word? Not in this case. “You know him?”
“I met him a few times, but I thought they were over.”
“I don’t have all the details, but I need to take a quick shower and head downtown.”
“Can I come with you?”
“No.” He sat on the bed next to her, touching her sweet lips, dreading the thought of leaving her. “There isn’t anything you can do there. If she happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, I’ll take care of it.” Even if she was in the right place at the wrong time, he would take care of that too. That was why clients paid him obscene amounts of money.
“But—”
“Don’t argue with me.”
“Okay.”
“You go back to sleep. I’ll text you when I know something.” He kissed her softly. “I hope to be back soon.”
“I wish you didn’t have to leave, but I’m glad Connie has you.”
Connie doesn’t have me. You do. In all the ways that I never knew possible.
Chapter 15
Julian rode the elevator to his penthouse on Sunday morning. He glanced at his watch. Six AM. Sorting out Connie’s mess took longer than he would have liked. The misguided girl met her ex at some seedy bar and gave him a ride home. Too bad for her, he’d stopped to sell some crack to an undercover cop and they were arrested within seconds. Connie had no priors and wasn’t in earshot of the deal. They released her, but not before Julian did some persuasive talking.
If he hadn’t trusted Connie before last night, the stunt she pulled when he dropped her off at her apartment twenty minutes ago didn’t help. He loosened his tie, trying to push out any negativity he had developed in the last few hours. The subject of Connie was going to be a tough sell when it came to Kayla.
