Page 2 of Mr. Wolfe's Nanny

I see Isa at the far end of the bar eyeing me and my company. She’s got her lips pursed. She’s always ready to swoop in but she’s my little sister. I hate that she feels likeshe’sgot to be the one to protectme.

I give her a subtle nod –I’m okay– and try to focus on the guy in front of me. He’s not bad looking. I know men find me attractive, at least until they realize how awkward I am. I can do this… even if I’d rather do this with the other guy.

“What’re you drinking?”

“Rum and coke.”And you’ve had a few already. I can smell it on his breath from here. Drunk guys make me uncomfortable. Along with a thousand other things.

My hands tremble. I clasp them tightly together across my lap.

He rudely calls the bartender for drinks. He doesn’t thank her once they’re poured. I prefer men with manners.

“I’ve seen you here before.” Has he? I don’t recall him. “You usually stay in the same spot.” I nod but I’m kind of freaked out.Should’ve stayed put, Quinn.

Mr. Handsome glances our way. Our eyes meet again.I walked over here for you. I’m so ridiculous. He’s not a mind reader and who says he’d even care that I wanted to talk to him?

“What’s your name?” my companion asks.

My name is uncommon and Isa says not to give them your real name unless you’re sure you feel comfortable. I’m not comfortable.

“Selina Kyle.”

I’d said the first name that came to mind but, luckily, this guy doesn’t catch on. Mr. Handsome, on the other hand, looks down at his drink and is biting back laughter.

“I’m Zachary. You wanna dance, Selina?”

I don’t have a chance to reply because he’s laid his hand on my thigh. He’stouchingme, unasked and uninvited. “Please, move your hand.” My voice shakes only a little. I see Isa moving my way with her eyes narrowed.

Zachary snorts and squeezes my thigh, moving his hand higher instead of moving it away. “Are you sure you really want me to do that? Or maybe you-”

“Yeah, she’s fucking sure.” The unwanted hand is gone and Zachary’s being yanked to his feet by Mr. Handsome. “Doyoulike being touched without your consent?” How did he move over here so quickly?

Zachary’s ‘why don’t you mind your business?’ trails off as his head tips back and back to stare at my champion. Those dark blue eyes are colder than ice as they gaze at Zachary who barely reaches his chin. He may wear a fancy-pants wristwatch but he looks dangerous right now.

“Why don’t you let the lady enjoy her drink in peace?” Mr. Handsome asks. I really need a name for him besides Mr. Handsome.

“Fine,” Zachary spits before turning to me. “Wouldn’t want to waste my night on a fucking prude anyway.”

My face grows hot at his unkind words and the unwanted attention.Breathe. Don’t panic.

I don’t panic. I sling my drink at him instead. What has gotten into me?

Except I douse both men with it.Oh shit!

Zachary storms off – good riddance - but I’m too busy dabbing at Mr. Handsome’s shirt to notice. “I amsosorry! I was aiming for him but obviously my aim needs work.” I hope he’s not pissed off.

“So, you don’t make a habit of throwing drinks at men in bars?” He doesn’t sound annoyed and he’s giving me that smile again.Have some mercy, sir.

I shake my head, my face on fire. “No. Oh, but your shirt,” I say, cringing.

“It’s just a shirt. May I buy you a drink since you’ve already got one for me?” I laugh at the joke as he nods to the vacated seat beside me.

“Yes, that’d be fine.” I glance at Isa –I’m okay.

“I’m sorry he was bothering you. Only a very brave man or a very foolish one messes with Catwoman.”

I grin like a dork. I knew he’d caught on to my alias earlier. “My sister says it’s safer to go with a fake name at a bar sometimes.”

“Your sister’s not wrong. I’m Clark Kent by the way.”
