The tray slips out of my hands and drops to the floor as I scramble to click out of the video of Scott and Jared fucking me. My vision blurs with stinging tears. I pocket my phone and crouch down, cleaning up as much of the mess as I can.
“Are you okay?” Nina asks as she runs up to help.
My hands are trembling. I use the fork to scoop up pasta off the floor. “I dropped it.”
Nina puts her hand on top of mine. “Breathe, April.”
A cleaner shows up to help us clean. I get to my feet, wiping my eyes and mumbling an apology.
Nina guides me back to the table.
Matt scoots his chair back. “I’ll get you food.”
They’re all watching me with concerned eyes.
“I’m okay. Really! I just dropped the tray.” My phone vibrates in my pocket.
“You’re crying,” Steph points out as I unlock the screen.
The Devil: Tonight. Same room. Same time.
My heart lurches.
Me: Fuck off!
The Devil: Do you want Rick to see the video? Your friends?
I raise my gaze and look over at the teachers’ table. Jared talks to one of the female teachers while Scott watches me with a smirk.
The Devil: Didn’t think so.
I switch my phone off.
“Did the apocalypse happen?” Steph says, taking a sip of her drink.
“Why?”
She gestures to my phone. “You’re off-grid.”
Josh looks over. “You switched your phone off?”
I spin it on the table. “What’s the big deal?”
Josh looks to Ben. “I bet you twenty she’ll switch it back on before the end of lunch.”
Ben smirks and rubs his tattooed fingers over his lips. “I think she can make it to the end of the school day.”
“Are you serious?” Steph laughs, her brown curls bouncing. “This is April we’re talking about. She can’t go that long without her phone.”
I tune out, my eyes locked on Scott. What is he up to?
