She shakes her head. “No, Nina. He was a dangerous man! We did what we had to do.”

Steph returns with a Cheshire cat smile on her lips. “Will these tongue-and-groove pliers work?”

Matt’s eyes bug out. “What the fuck have you got tongue-and-groove pliers in your car for?”

Steph shrugs. “The plumber that lives on my street said they’re good. He never goes anywhere without his.”

“When do you fix sinks?” Josh asks, grabbing the body’s armpits and dragging it further into the trees.

“I don’t. But the plumber was right—you never know when they’ll come in handy.”

“I can’t watch this!” I whisper.

“Let’s go wait in the car.” Dallas steers me away and opens the passenger door.

I get inside, out of the rain, and stare wide eyed at their backs as they crouch down. “Oh, god!” I whisper.

“Don’t look!”

My stomach turns. I scramble to open the passenger door and barely make it outside before today’s dinner spews out of me.

Dallas is there, stroking my back and whispering reassurances.

“You’re okay,” she assures me, guiding me back inside the car.

I lean my head on the passenger window and squeeze my eyes shut.

“We’re going to find her!” Dallas whispers as the rain hammers on the roof. “Trust me!”
