Mac:About that party …

There’s a knock at the door, and Clive pokes his head inside. “My apologies. I didn’t mean to interrupt.”

“It’s okay.” I motion for him to come into the office and over to my desk. My family is important, but this job is too. And maybe apart of me likes the idea of everyone witnessing me in a leadership role. A very small, minuscule part of me. Microscopic. Probably.

“What do youneed?” I put a little extra oomph behind the word need.

Clive runs a hand through his hair and smiles, sheepishly. “I thought you would want to know Mrs. Lockhart is here, looking for you.”

Ack. I bite down the panic at being caught on a FaceChat with my family at the same time that my boss shows up. Then I remember, this is my break. I should be allowed to do whatever I want. And at least I’m not in Spencer’s arms. Small favors.

I swallow and act strong. Self-assured. Like a leader.

“Do you know what the mayor wants?” This time I put the oomph onmayor.

“I believe she’s soliciting opinions about the set up for movie night.”

“Ah, yes. Of course.” I keep my voice calm and even. “The mayor needs myopinion. After all I am the campdirector.”

Opinion. Director. I’m overdoing it so much, I’m almost embarrassed by myself. But I want my family to see me as more than just the McCoy clown.

“Unless you’re too busy …” Clive ducks down, peering into screen. “My, my. Judging by all the red hair, this must be your family, Tess. Greetings, one and all!” He flashes a crescent of white teeth.

Olivia: I’m Tess’s little sister. Who are YOU?

Me:You’re three minutes younger than I am.

Darby:Look out everyone. Liv’s on the prowl for another proposal.

Big Mama: (to my mom) Who’s prowling, Remy?

Me:I’ve got to go now. Important camp stuff. We’ll talk again soon. Love you all. Over and out!

Before anyone can ask more questions—or launch a protest or get engaged to Clive—I hit the red button to leave the chat. “Let’s go find Mrs. Lockhart,” I chirp. Then I hop up from my seat, leaving a spinning chair behind me. Another brilliant save for T-Time.
