“Well, you’re gonna have to during lunch because he’s going to be there.”

“Dammit, Loz, just let me die while eating this in peace.”

Marc chuckled while pushing back in his chair. “As entertaining as this is, I need to get going. Love you, baby.” He kissed Lozza, then smiled at me. “And good luck with lunch, Jax.”

“Thanks,” I deadpanned. “I’m gonna need it.”

With a final wave, his light laughter echoed down the hallway as he left. The front door had barely clicked closed before Loz turned to me and cut straight to the chase.

“So, you and J-dogg Malone, huh?”

SIX

JACE

“J!” I straightened from leaning against my parent’s front fence, wanting to clear the air with Jax before she entered the house.

She powered past with her head held high, not so much as acknowledging me in the slightest. I hurried to catch up to her surprisingly fast stride, considering she wore high-heeled boots and tight as hell pants.

I snagged her inner elbow when she refused to stop. “Jax, c’mon. We need to talk.”

“Fuck you, Jason,” she hissed and viciously tugged her arm free. “Get your fucking hands off me.”

“No. Not until we talk about last night. And it needs to bebeforewe go inside.”

“I’ve got nothing to say apart from apologising to myself for the huge fucking mistake I made.”

“Webothmade.”

Resentment darkened her expression, and she gave me one hell of a glare before shoving past.

“J, listen,” I implored, stepping in front of her to halt her before she took the front steps. “That came out wrong.” I rubbed a hand over my head. “Yes, we shouldn’t have done what we did, but I didn’t bunk out this morning like you’re thinking. I woke, and you weren’t in bed, so I got up. Hearing you being sick in the bathroom, I went outside to piss and then leaned against the side of the house for countless minutes while trying to decide if I was going to be sick too. By the time I went back inside, you were already back in bed asleep. Knowing we were coming here for lunch, I came home so you could get some more sleep.”

Her scathing glower didn’t ease, and she bent to pick up one of the potted cacti from Mum’s garden.

“Want to know what you can do with that excuse?” She thrust it at me. “Shove it up your ass.”

I cursed and juggled the pot in my hands, then bit back another curse when the front door whipped open, and Mum appeared with a beaming smile.

“Ah, Jax, my dear. Don’t let Jace hold you up, come inside already. It’sfreezing.”

“Just like her heart,” I murmured under my breath, but not far enough.

All but dead from Jax’s scathing glare, I set the potted cactus back in the garden, then followed her pert little ass up the front steps. That ass had me torn between hating myself for tapping it last night, while fighting off licks of arousal at the mere thought of it.

I paused a safe distance away while Mum hugged Jax, then kicked off my boots as Mum rambled about what she’d made for lunch. Jax lingered long enough to unzip herself from her boots and shuck out of her coat before following after Mum.

“How was last night?” I heard Mum ask. “Must have been a big one if Jace crawled home this morning looking worse for wear.”

“Meh, I’ve had better,” Jax grumbled and looked me up and down when I entered the kitchen.

I ground my teeth and gave her a look of warning. The animosity radiating off her was like a fucking cloud, and I made sure to take a wide berth around it as I headed for my coffee.

“Oh,” Mum replied, sounding miffed. “That’s a real shame, hon; Jace said it was one of the best nights he’d ever had.”

A sip of coffee had barely passed my lips and snagged in my throat, sending me into a coughing fit that not only made me gag, but compounded the dull headache I’d been nursing all morning.

“Goodness, Jason!” Mum exclaimed, slamming me on the back with the heel of her hand.
