turned and walked out of the alley.

Dallas knew that, short of some crazy act of mercy

from the universe, she was hooped. She wasn’t going to see

Quinn again. She’d taken the only shot she had and since that

was a sports analogy, it was easy to see why she’d failed.

She’d always sucked so badly at anything athletic. Apparently

she also sucked a whole list of other important things.

 Being a good girlfriend.

 Being honest when it counted.

 Making the right decision.

 Standing up for herself.

Being young and frightened and not wanting to lose

 anyone in her life.

Healing the rift when she still could have.

Going about her life like there wasn’t a big, huge

 chunk of heart missing.

Lying to herself that she was fine.

 Coming back to Topeka.

Trying to make things right because she really did care

about Quinn and she truly was sorry.

 Apologizing.

Dallas turned her head up to the sky as well. It was

totally blue and so bright that the sun burned her already tear-

filled eyes. She sent up a silent apology to Willford, for

blowing the last shot he’d given her.

 Chapter 9

 Quinn

“Two family meetings in one week,” Billy hooted as he

and Danica walked into Quinn’s kitchen together. “And free

sibling bribery dinner too. I like it.”
