“Yes. Yes, for sure. Maybe tomorrow afternoon? We could

start with some filming. It’s really not complicated to use the

camera. You’ll catch on right away. We could sit down and

edit whatever you shoot tomorrow night. Then you can see the

 process as one fluid thing.”

 “A symbiotic thing?”

Adalynn laughed. “I don’t know about that. Maybe.”

Cassia pulled something out of the back pocket of her jeans.

The pair of leather gloves Adalynn had left out on the table for

her early that morning. “Thank you for these. They’re

 awesome.”

Adalynn didn’t get a chance to respond before Cassia

slipped out the sliding door to go back to work. She wasn’t

sure what she would have said even if she’d had a chance. The

words felt stuck her throat, but they were also burning her

stomach. Was it terrible to imagine a life without someone in it

when they’d come into it out of nowhere and would leave soon

 after?

She had more than a lump in her throat when she thought

about Cassia leaving. She wouldn’t just miss her. It was so, so

much more than that. Adalynn didn’t have words to describe

how she’d feel with Cassia not there. She didn’t even want to

think about it, but unless she changed her mind about a lot of

things, changed her habits, her routine, her very life, unless

she got brave real fast and got real true to herself, she couldn’t

imagine Cassia staying, no matter how much she might want

 her to.

 Cassia

“Can I ask you a question?”
