real and as certain as the golden rays of the sun. It was no

mirage, no shimmering reflection that vanished when it was

close enough to touch. Cassia certainly hadn’t expected it, and

Adalynn obviously was trying to deny herself, but she’d also

been just as obviously unable to leave it alone. She’d kept tabs

on Cassia, and she’d appeared in Vegas like an apparition to

watch over her and claim her, to take her back to the land of

 the living.

Now that she was getting too close, Adalynn was throwing

 >

up barriers. Cassia was going to tear them down as soon as

they were erected. She’d chase Adalynn’s fears, bring them to

the surface, and banish them one by one until she realized she

was braver than she knew she could be.

 Chapter 14

 Adalynn

The one thing Adalynn had always been good at, found joy

in, had made her refuge, was photography. She liked filming

video almost just as much, but she wasn’t used to not being

able to find refuge in her work. It had once been her greatest

passion, but now it felt like a secondary consolation prize.

She’d locked herself in her editing room all morning, away

from a set of cornflower eyes and hair the color of watery,

early morning sun, those first piercing rays that usher in the

 glorious canopy of the day.

Cassia was more than intriguing. She was haunting.

Adalynn had no idea why she couldn’t make herself stick to

her plan of keeping things platonic. She’d crossed the line the

night before and if it hadn’t been for that insurance phone call,

 she would have gone further.
