Chapter Twenty-Nine
Megan
Four months later
Four months later,I had a big day ahead of me. Yesterday, January 9, I’d officially signed my contract. I wasn’t an intern anymore. I was starting the new year as an associate, and I had my hands full at the office. Charles was thrilled with the concept I’d presented in the competition, so he gave the go-ahead with my design. Luke was working on the design for Travis’s hotel—and I was his right hand. I was thrilled to be part of the Maxwell legacy.
Tonight, we were having a small celebration with the whole Maxwell clan and Nina. I was beyond excited. It was a Saturday too, which meant I could enjoy every moment of the day. Luke had surprised me by inviting Aunt Dana to Chicago, and we were picking her up from the airport in a bit. For now, we still had some time for ourselves, and I was pampering my man with some pancakes. I was trying to move in the kitchen as silently as possible. I always woke up at the crack of dawn when I had an exciting day ahead. I didn't know why.
My jaw dropped when I entered the living room. It was full of flowers: roses, daisies, lilies. They smelled incredible. What did he do, wake up to receive the flower delivery and then go back to sleep?I smiled from ear to ear. Luke was truly wonderful. I debated heading right back to the bedroom and waking him up with kisses, but he deserved to sleep in for half an hour. I could always kiss him later.
I prepared a bunch of pancakes and drizzled maple syrup and honey on them. After arranging them on plates with blueberries, I went to wake up my man. To my astonishment, he wasn't in bed. I heard water running, so I went to the bathroom and just watched him in the shower. I couldn't see him clearly through the glass, but I didn't want to open the door. Who knew what he might convince me to do? I wouldn't put it past him to talk me into joining him, and we didn't havethatmuch time.
Turning off the water, he turned around. "Babe, good morning." He opened the glass door, grabbing a towel.
I sighed, looking him up and down. "Good morning indeed." I couldn't help myself and went closer, putting my hands on his chest and rising on my tiptoes to give him a chaste kiss, feeling his muscles underneath my fingers. I took a step back quickly before I lost myself in this gorgeous man.
Taking my hand, he pulled me flat against him. His damp skin wet my clothes, but I didn't mind. He sealed his lips over mine. They tasted like fresh mint. He kissed me slowly, tangling our tongues.
Oh yeah, that’s what I call a morning kiss.
When we finally pulled apart, I said, "Come on, I made pancakes."
He jerked his head back. "Babe, I wanted to do that for you.”
“Hmm... but you didn’t wake up early.”
“I planned to. I came back to bed for a quick nap after the flowers came in, and it ended up being longer. But it's not that late."
I laughed. "Let's not start that conversation about time again and agree to disagree, okay?"
"I’ve never understood that expression. If you disagree, then you disagree. There's no agreeing."
"Semantics," I said.
He rolled his eyes. "Come on. I'm eager to start the day."
He'd brought his clothes with him into the bathroom and had put them on the sink. Within a blink of an eye, he was dressed in jeans and a T-shirt. He was definitely fast in the morning.
During the past couple weeks, I had mostly slept at his apartment, and I also had so many clothes here that I’d unofficially moved in. We usually went to work together. He told me that the whole office knew anyway and that no one seemed to care one way or the other. Of course, Luke was the boss, so it was unlikely they’d say anything to either of us. I figured it would be awkward, but it wasn't. Klaus kept teasing me about requesting an upgrade, such as sharing an office with the boss, but I was happy with the moving desk concept.
We went straight to the living room, and I smiled up at him. “Thank you for the flowers. I can't believe I didn't hear them being brought in."
"You sleep soundly, babe. And I told them not to ring the bell. They texted me when they arrived.”
We ate quickly at the counter, but the plan was to have a bigger breakfast once we brought Aunt Dana home from the airport. She was landing in a little over an hour.
“Come on, let's go. We don't want to be late picking up your aunt," Luke said once I finished my second pancake.
"She's going to love this."
"I sure hope so."
"Oh, so these flowers have a lot of heavy lifting to do, don't they? They don't just have to make me happy but her too."
Laughing, he kissed my hand before we left the apartment. I was absolutely content. I couldn’t remember ever feeling this way before, as if things simply were in the right place.
On the ride to the airport, I browsed house listings. Luke and I did that a lot, but so far, none of the ones on the market caught our eye. He loved his penthouse but insisted that he’d prefer to live in a house.
