“If I had a man like that after me, I could care less what was going on, as long as he did it to my body.”
She couldn’t help but chuckle. “There is that. But…he wants things I’m not sure I can give him.”
“You’re worried he would hurt you. He wouldn’t.”
Addy faced Lindsey. “Why do you say that?”
“Well, he might screw up and do stupid man things. They are the lesser of the two sexes, but he wouldn’t do things deliberately to hurt you.”
“And how do you know? He could be a horrible person. He’s a lawyer.”
Lindsey shook her head. “First, your father is a lawyer and an old sweetie.”
“I’m sure all the people he went after when he was Attorney General think the same.”
Lindsey waved that away. “Secondly, he has kind eyes. A man with eyes like that would never hurt a woman.”
There was a tinge of sadness to the words. There were things in her past, things Addy knew Lindsey wasn’t ready to talk about yet. She gave her a hug and slipped off her stool.
“So, where are you going, boss?”
She gave her a smile. “I’ve got a dinner to get ready for.”
And maybe by the end of the night, she’d figured out just how to say no.
He recognizeda knock at his door as decidedly not Addison. Irritated, he opened the door and found Justin smiling at him.
“What the hell are you doing here?”
“Fine way to greet your business partner.”
He rolled his eyes. Justin had been kind of…off lately, and he didn’t know why. Vic knew he should get to the bottom of it, but he’d been preoccupied with Addison.
“Come in, but you don’t get to stay.”
He turned back to the kitchen, knowing Justin would follow him.
He glanced at the clock and realized he had just forty-five minutes before Addison would show up.
“So, did you move on from Addison?”
“No.”
A long pause.
“Damn, you talked her into coming to eat tonight.”
He knew Justin wanted to ask, but he wouldn’t out of respect…okay, he had no respect, but there were some lines Vic would not cross. Still, there was a serious question hanging in the air. As he grabbed the fresh asparagus he got that afternoon and rinsed it off, he decided to at least throw his friend a nugget of information.
“I did talk her into coming over tonight. That’s all I got her to agree to.”
“Of course.”
He glanced at his friend, who was studying him with such a serious look it made Vic uncomfortable. Justin was rarely serious these days, except when it came to money.
“What do you mean by that?”
“You’ve been obsessed with her for months…probably longer. You said she doesn’t play, and she hasn’t given you an answer?”
