“Yeah, it’s doing great. That’s fucking fantastic. Butyou’renot doing great, and I want to know what’s going on.”
I sighed. “What makes you think something’s going on?”
Before Chaz could answer, Lucy appeared again.
“Sebastian is here to see you.”
I groaned. “Is the whole family going to barge in on my work time today?” Bas walked in while I was talking, without my telling Lucy it was fine for him to come in. But Bas was like that, obnoxious as fuck when he wanted to be. “We should call Mom and have her visit too. Chaz, why don’t you go pick up Sydney, and we’ll have a family reunion right here in our office?”
Chaz raised his eyebrows.
“What the fuck is wrong with you?” Bas asked, dropping himself into the other chair.
“Nothing’s wrong!” I cried out.
My two brothers glanced at each other before they looked at me again. Chaz sank deeper into the chair, an ankle over his knee, and interlinked his fingers on his chest. Bas leaned forward, elbows on his knees, eyes sparkling with humor. He was laughing at me, and that just pissed me off more.
But that was the point, wasn’t it? He wanted to piss me off to show me that I wasn’t in a good space.
My brothers were right, something was wrong. And I couldn’t hide it from them.
“You’ve been MIA for over a week,” Chaz pointed out. “And you’ve been in a terrible mood.”
“I wouldn’t be so mild about it,” Bas said with a shrug. “And that can only mean one thing. Why haven't you told him about Holly yet?”
“Who?” Chaz asked.
“He's in love,” Bas said.
I shook my head. “Fuck off out of my business.”
Chaz whistled through his teeth. “She did a number on you. Why didn’t I know you were seeing someone?”
“Because it’s nothing,” I snapped. "And you know me. It’s not how I roll.”
Chaz bounced the foot on his knee, studying me.
“It’s not,” I reiterated.
When neither of them said anything, stretching out the silence so I would fill it, I groaned and shut my laptop. I sat back in my chair.
“It shouldn’t have happened. I fell for her, and now I’m the one with a broken heart. Again. You would think I had learned my lesson, but no.”
“Tell us what happened,” Bas said.
I sighed and started the story from the beginning. My brothers cared about me. And they were worried. If I was going to tell anyone, it was better that it be them.
When I finished my story, Chaz narrowed his eyes at me.
“You’re kidding me, right?”
“What?” I asked.
“She didn’t do anything wrong.”
“Of course, she did! She used me. For my money.”
“You’re the guy giving money away like it’s going out of fashion,” Bas pointed out. “You let your tenants stay on for free.”
